Ive been searching and reading...and then searching and reading more. Finally, Ive driven myself to indecision and figured I would see if I can get a more comprehensive thread started on this subject.
Recently I picked up a 15" beacon star vibe flat lap and Im ordering up grit and polish to get things going. I have 4 pans that came with it and the previous owner labeled them 90, 220, 600, Polish. Easy enough to understand which one had which grit in it.
The plan is to use 60/90 SiC in the first pan, 120/220 SiC in the second pan, and 600 SiC in the third pan. Where Im having a major brain fart is what to get for polish in the 4th pan and if my initial choice of SiC for the first three stages is a good idea.
And the polish media has my head spinning. Do I get Alumina Oxide? Cerium Oxide? 1000 grit SiC? Tin Oxide? Theres too many choices!!
Being a faceter, I usually match up specific types of stones to the type of abrasive/polish thats recommended for a specific stone. But I dont think that really matters as much when running a vibe lap. Plus I dont really see it being necessary to order 4 different types of polish. So I wanted to see what others are using and if anyone has any nuggets of wisdom for someone starting this journey.
Im also open to any suggestions about my current choice of grit for the first three pans. Im somewhat questioning my choice of 120/220 for the second pan and debating on just using 220.
Ive got a good grip on the process, I have bumpers for my stones, I have lead weights for slabs, I have a drip tank to keep things wet, picked up some fresh carpet for the polish pan...heck, I even ordered new rubber balls to go under the pan tray. Im just stuck being indecisive about grit.
Help a guy out so I can spend more money on stuff!
