Hello all,
I have been cutting rough in different shapes with sometimes good results for the smallest pieces. The larger pieces (Up to 4 inches in diameter, in a 12lb barrel) made of jaspers, brazilian agates are often sawed in the shape of a cube of some sort. After A YEAR (!!!), I ended up with a smooth cube like smaller stones with rounded edges but nothing remotely round. I understand that I probably to something wrong but I can't figure out what. Can you help me ?
Thank you,
Michel

What grit are you using and are you recharging?

I think you should only be able to fit one 4-inch rock in the 12lb right? For cube shape, much smaller rocks will have better chance to be rounded up more nicely, given there are more larger (non-cube shape) rocks in the same batch for more effective grinding, but that also will take very long.
For your huge piece, you definitely want to preform it to be as close to your ideal final shape as possible. Curious to see how it looks like now.

Yeah I imagine the contact points on a stone that large would be problematic even in a 12. It will pulverize the smaller stones. Stones around that size, if more than 1, will be so limited in their contact points that it will never really get rounded. I had the same problem with stuff cut in squares a lot smaller that that. I have a flat lap so stones like that I can round the corners and basically get them whatever shape I want but that takes a lot of time and dedication too lol. Some I just settled for the softened squares.
