Petrified wood is a challenge. It is my favorite rock to tumble (came in 4th place in the World Rock Tumbling Contest this year with Pet wood). THe biggest issue with Pet wood is the natural fracture points (growth rings and wood cells). I think I know what you are describing and more than likely it is undercutting due to poorly healed fractures (that occurred naturally a long the growth rings) Frustrating to say the least. Patience is key with pet wood, and I often run it for many weeks in course, only to see it break or crack in later stages. The other problem I run into is pet wood that is replaced with softer minerals rather than quartz (I see a lot of opalized pet wood, that just takes forever to work out all the problems). Again patience is key. I use plastic pellets in all my stages from pre polish onward. If I'm running them in the vibe, I use ceramics. I don't like ceramics in my rotaries as I'm not pleased with the end results.
