I found this rock on our property in northwest Missouri. So probably glacial and could have come from Minnesota or further north. Has what looks like a few thin veins of milky quartz around it (some of these show in the first photo). The brown stuff reminds me of brown jasper I find around here. The black stuff doesn't appear to be on the surface (at least there is no undercutting of the black material). Or maybe it is just the same hardness as the brown stuff. I haven't tried to do a scratch test but it hardly lost any material when I tunbled it (I think I started on 220 because it was already well rounded). Really shinned up well but has a lot of small fractures around it. Currious to know if anyone has seen anything like this. Thanks, Chris

Cut one in half and see if is layered. Noooooo. It is the only one I have found. But I might be tempted. I suppose I could make a couple of cabs out of it that way.

Well probably not opal, rmf, but one could always hope. Actually, I was looking as some similar rock today (not as many black parts) that I cut last week as shown below. I hadn't noticed the similar black material until today. This rock, I think, is brown jasper (at least that is what I have been calling it). I will try to put some pics of other ones I have found together and see what people think.
