I think the writing is on the wall for me. Was always hoping that even though all I do is rotary and no vibing, that I might place in the contest someday. But all those names with high points, a nice touch they did this year, didn't include mine. So it's pretty obvious that the shine I'm getting on my rocks of all types, while pleasing to me and others that see them, is a cut below the tops.
Wish there was someone I knew that lived not far from me with a vibe, then I could give that person a bunch of rocks I've already polished and see just how much more polish happens as I have enough to do this and also keep a control for comparison.
Wonder what is is about vibes that gets the top shine possible?

Well here is a group shot and closeups of a few that I didn't send in. If you are wondering about the ones I sent in, well, I forgot to take a picture of them. Think I was glad to get them in the mail and out of my life. I was really hoping that the large long one would be one I sent in. It looked great until the final polish stage when all of a sudden two soft spots appeared in the white part and kept getting bigger (see closeup). Couldn't get rid of them without taking that end off. I noticed a couple of these that I have had in a bag for a few weeks developed a white film on them. I hope the ones I sent in didn't do that. Chris Hmm I am wondering what have caused the white film. Is it that some component in the stone is not stable and the surface will change its color once exposed to the air for long enough?

Wonder what is is about vibes that gets the top shine possible? If your willing to pay shipping both ways I could probably help make this happen. Send me a couple pounds of agates, jaspers, quartz. Preferably materials you have enough of to keep some of yours that you polished for reference. I'll run them through 120/220, 500, 1000 and polish and send them back. Chuck

Chuck Chuck, if they were already rotary polished, would the comparison test be better if either: 1) You didn't do anything except put them directly in the vibe, to improve my rotary polish shine, or 2) Only do 1,000 to knock off the existing polish shine before you do a new shine?

Nope, In my opinion you go back to where I start my vibe process which is 120/220. No sense leaving any guess work. I would want to start with a clean slate. Edit: I am pretty confident that my 120/220 step in the vibe preps the stones better then 120/220 done in the rotary.

I understand, and as I sort through my rocks over the next few months, I'm going to start separating some out. I just may take you up on this offer. If I pick some pairs that are identical, and take some before photos, then just how much vibe polish is will become apparent to me. My house is getting full of polished rocks of all types. I have no idea how much or how many as it's never been inventoried. But if I ever get a vibe (maybe when I retire and am at home more), it would be easy to send them all through the final polishing steps if I wanted to get the most perfect shine possible.
