Hey, I noticed there are a lot of threads about south texas agates and I'm eager to visit anywhere that isn't San Antonio and its endless landscape of gray chert.
I'm also from Pennsylvania, which may as well be a different country as far as geology, weather, flora and fauna - and I feel like there is a plethora of minerals comparatively to San Antonio, but maybe you all can steer me in the right direction?
I'm willing to travel to find these agates/desert jasper/anything that isn't GRAY or BEIGE CHERT.
Have pity on me, I've been digging through landscaping rocks at costco and bought some desert jasper on etsy to practice with my lapidary saw and tumbler.
If you have any locations that you can give me an actual address too? I would be so appreciative.
South Texas seems really promising but its HUGE and I'm afraid of getting lost.
I appreciate any information you can give me!

I have some really sweet spots in PA that I'm willing to trade. Kentucky if you like fossils, Arkansas for huge quartz points, Oklahoma for weird sandstone, but alas, I only find chert in Texas.

yes, so I'm told. I also saw many individuals who have had tons of success in southern texas, near the border. But I need to be sure so I don't accidentally get myself trafficked or something. I have a dog, but he's kind of an idiot so...

Howdy, Just go a couple of hours southeast of San Antone to a triangle drawn between George West Texas, Simmons City and Three Rivers. Miles and miles of gravel and dirt roads in the area oilfields that make good roadside collecting for petwood jasper, agate, limb casts etc. Hunt roadside ditches but get you a gem scoop so you don't have to reach into the foliage. Some of the largest rattlers I've ever seen in that thornbrush country. Google the are first to see what roads dirt are still or have good roadsides because lately they are topping a lot of the roads with caliche which tends to cover the good stuff.

Lived in San Antonia 1988-1990. You might check out Mason, Tx for topaz. There are fee digs that are reasonable last time I checked over 30 years ago! There are ammonite fossils and petrfied wood in the area east and south of Austin and East Texas in several locations. I understand some of these petrified wood sites in east Texas are easily accessed from major highways. Be careful out in the scrub. It can be a LONG way to medical care or emergency response in much of West Texas. Our club members have made several trips to the Big Bend area for plume and moss agate hunting and found great material. The fee digs can be expensive and one of the most famous has changed ownership (the Woodward Ranch, if I recall correctly) and is closed t collecting. Contact Teri Smith to get current information (google her). I believe our club members used her to help set up our club trips. I understand Big Bend has pet wood and fossils, too.
