Howdy all! Picked up this vintage Highland Park 18" model J-3 a couple weeks ago. Unfortunately the owner passed on, so I wasn't able to get any info on the saw from the relative selling it. I noticed this "Star Diamond" bucket under the saw and tubing to connect it to the saw so I grabbed it when I picked up the saw. I hoped it was like a prototype everclean system but looks like it's just an oil pump. I tried searching a bunch to see why Star Diamond made this kit but couldn't find a peep of information. I'm wondering why the heck did someone add this oil pump to this slab saw? The only reasoning I could think is to run a smaller blade? Maybe it would reduce misting or keep the oil at the blade cleaner? The old fashioned, "kerf in the oil", has been working just dandy since the stone age when caveman first invented lapidary saws. It just seems like an additional unnecessary part that could fail. I'm in the process of mucking out this old beauty and getting it back alive and just trying to make sense of the reasoning behind the oil pump. I'm planning on removing it but was wondering of there is an advantage to it I'm not realizing. Any info would be great!

Give it a try. You may like it. Thanks Mark, yeah I might give it a try with a smaller blade and see how it does. I just bought a new 18" MK-301 for it so I cringe at the thought of that stupid pump stopping mid cut and wrecking the new blade. They must have been running Chevron Almag or Pella or something nasty in this saw, it stinks to high heaven. I scraped it out and scrubbed it down with degreaser yesterday. It still stunk so bad I had to scrub it down with degreaser and wash it out again lol. I'll have to do the same to that oil pump bucket before it touches any nice clean mineral oil.
