A couple months ago, I was watching one of Rob's Jugglerguy Michigan Rocks videos where he kind of implied (at least I thought he did) that it was hard to keep coming up with ideas for videos each week and that he hadn't done that many videos on Lake Michigan or at least on Lake Michigan Petoskey stones. So I asked him if he would like to go looking for Petoskey Stones in Petoskey, Michigan since I grew up there and knew of a couple places that were harder to get to and less frequently visited. We met up last Tuesday in Petoskey and below is the latest Michigan Rocks video. I think I have heard others say this but I will say it again that Rob is the same in person as he is in the videos. I really enjoyed the day which went from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. After that, Rob asked me if I wanted to go to another location he knew about but by that time I was about worn out. Rob managed to find a few decent Petoskey Stones although I was hopping for a larger one (like the small one you see in the video with the very dark eyes and very regular hexagons). I think the lack of ice the last two winters and about a 2 foot drop in water level over last year minimized the errosion of the bank we were searching. I will need to pray for higher water and colder temperatures next winter. I will probably have a thread with some pictures of the rocks I brought home (that weren't in the video) later once I have gotten caught up from being away. Please keep in mind while watching the video that I have a face for radio and a voice for silent movies. LOL Chris

Hey Chris, thanks for posting this. Your face and voice are fine. I don't like hearing myself either. I always get annoyed when Nancy plays my videos when I'm in the room!
I really enjoyed the day with you. I don't think I told you that I went out behind the supermarket and hunted well into the state park after I left you. I found five or six small Petoskey Stones. After that, I had had enough and headed home. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with some of your finds.

I think I found about 10 small (1 to 1.5 inches long) Petoskey Stones but they were pretty nice quality. Also found a few horn corals but always hard to tell how those will turn out. That area is very different than it was last year when the water level was higher. Thanks for sharing! It is a fun trip. You two are very fine gentlemen. Rob is really good at making those videos. Very cool! Looks like y'all had a great time. I didn't know he was hiding rocks, too. It was a great time and glad I thought about the rock stash when I did.

That video is flat out awesome Chris!! I saw this earlier...but had to wait until American Idol was over to watch this with sound! I noticed Jugglerguy mentioned "stripey rocks" a third of the way through the video (and several more times!) Nothing beat the stripey rock at the 18:42 mark! Rob, I love the way you "clip" over to working the stones during the video rather than leaving it all to the end. You do this very well! You guys both did fantastic in this video! It brought back some good memories of when Rob was over this way!

Looks like a nice day to just be out on the water looking for cool rocks. I would think the larger ones, like the one that broke, would be fun to slab and cab. I look forward to seeing what all you found Chris and what you do with them. I’m hoping🤞there’s a slab coming from a coral or Petoskey. And Rob, Jugglerguy your KN is sooo clean!🤣🤣 I’d like my work area to be so nice but it seems by the time I’m done stealing an hour to cab, it’s too late and I’m too tired to clean up my toys. Luckily, mine doesn’t have to be ready for a photo-shoot at a moments notice.🤓 I do really like how you insert your polishing video in with the rockhounding video, it’s more fun to watch that way than all grouped together at the end. Edit: I hadn’t even seen jasoninsd ‘s comment yet when I mentioned that ☝️ so I guess that’s multiple thumbs ups for the polishing video inserts.👍👍👍

I get a lot of positive comments about the little polishing clips throughout my beach videos. I can't always do that, but Petoskey Stones are so soft and quick to polish that I can almost always find time to do that when I find some of them. It's worth the extra effort, I think.

What you don't see in my videos is the very cluttered other side of the room. It's good that I can control what the camera sees!

I know my family really liked being able to see how some of the Petoskey Stones polished. I should have told Rob about all those large strippy rocks ahead of time but it was great to listen to him keep seeing them and commenting on them.Looks like a nice day to just be out on the water looking for cool rocks. It was taking an effort to keep my nose dry for the video. LOL Those larger Charlevoix stones will definitely get slabbed at some point.

I subscribe to Michigan Rocks and have seen this video pop up in my feeds, but haven't watched it yet. I have to tell you Chris, that polished Petoskey stone you included in our rock exchange is one of my prized possessions! I keep it on my desk at work and show it off to anyone who is even slightly interested. I'm happy you live someplace close enough to collect these amazing rocks!

Hi Chris, I watched the video right after it was posted on Rob's site. It was great seeing the face and hearing the voice of chris1956. Love the Petoskey stones.

Looks like we are in for 4 or 5 days of rain coming up so I should have time to get through the rocks and post a few pics before and polished.

Good stuff.
If rob ever made a video with me, 90% of it would be beeping sound’s because he’d be editing out my foul mouth 😂

I polished a couple of the Petoskey Stones today that were in the Michgan Rocks Video. First one is the Petoskey Stone that is at about 2:45 in the video (encase you are really interested). Attached are pictures before and after. I think Rob was right that this one wasn't going to be great. Turned out ok. I only did one side. There is a little bit of pink in this one that doesn't show up on the pics. The pink is caused from iron. Also the little fossil is neat. I think it might be a crinoid (viewed from the side with most of one segmenet missing) but could be wrong. Unpolished Wet Polished Dry Second one is the Petoskey Stone that I hold up at about 9:10 in the video. This one turned out pretty nice. There is some soft limestone or sand in some of the eyes. But there is a lot of pink although it doesn't show up real well in the pics (you can see the color best in the last closeup pic). Happy with this one. I only polished the one face but may do the others later as there is a fair amount of pink on the other sides also. This is one that if baked in mineral oil, the bad spots in the eyes would mostly disappear. Probably won't do that with this one. Rob Jugglerguy picked up one larger Petoskey Stone that looked like it had some pink in it. Not sure if he kept that one or not but I don't think it made the video. Unpolished Wet Polished Dry Thanks for looking Chris

Really cool. Ya that 2nd one is really nice and the polish made the patterns really pop. They look neat though even just rough. Makes me wonder if it’d be possible to polish them somehow and yet keep the craters. It looks like the surface of the moon. I wonder if sandblasting with various grits of sand could keep the craters and also develop a polish.

I did bring a larger pink one home and slabbed it. It didn't make the video because it was complete garbage inside. Here's the part I decided not to slab. You can see some of the pink color.

I think that the number and quality of Petoskey Stones we found that day is the worst that I have found in those areas in the last five years that I have been looking for them. I have to believe the low water and no ice for the last two winters just hasn't stirred them up and depositied them on the shore. I have some ugly ones that I will post later that I collected from your secret spot. Will see if any of them turn out or not. Regarding the pink ones, I have found some of those in the past in the area you went to between the super market and the State Park.
