So my dads on search and rescue and got the call (I just got off the phone with him). Apparently some gal was rockhounding up at the batcaves (batcave jasper location). She tried to repel in from the top. A massive Boulder dislodged and came down on her. She didn’t die. However got smashed and stuck on a shelf. After multiple attempts to retrieve her, they finally had to call in a helicopter with a basket to get her off the shelf. I’ll post the news article when it comes available. News article says she was rock climbing. But from what I was told, she was actually rock hounding. Which would be consistent with where she was at. ktvz.com/news/accidents-crashes/2024/08/29/oregon-army-national-guard-helicopter-crew-rescues-injured-rock-climber-from-narrow-ledge-near-ochoco-reservoir/

That’s scary! I’m worried enough about something happening to me while I am alone in the forest. No way in heck I would be rock climbing or spelunking or even hiking in a remote location alone without being incredible confident that I can stay safe and contact people somehow. My forest is rapidly dying (didn’t know when we bought it). I frequently worry that a tree will fall on me and hubby won’t realize that anything is wrong because it’s common for me to spend hours there

No rock is worth risking your life for. Hope she heals up.

No rock is worth risking your life for. Hope she heals up. I’m glad she’s ok. Could’ve been way worse. I’ve spent a large portion of my life all over those and other rim rocks/rock outcrops here in central Oregon. And have done the exact same thing she did (minus having rocks fall on me). It’s about knowing the terrain and the risks involved. That’s not to say everything goes according to plan, however those risks can be greatly mitigated by preparation. Any time I’ve repelled off onto a cliff face, I take a ton of preemptive measures to ensure that if something goes wrong, it’s on me and my mistakes, not unforeseen circumstances if that makes sense.

No rock is worth risking your life for. Hope she heals up. I think I know what you mean but it's all about assessing and mitigating the risk. Probably one of the biggest risks is driving to a location.

Probably one of the biggest risks is driving to a location. Yeah, 49 years old and repelling down to a cave. I’m not quite sure about her physical status, but I’m going to assume she wasn’t physically fit enough for that venture in the first place. Spoke to my dad more about this. He had spoken with the SRO, and while the news said she was rock climbing, the officer said she was hounding, and was trying to repel in from the top to a cave. She had anchored to a rock, it dislodged and came down on her and crushed her ribs. I know exactly where she got stuck. Have climbed down that cliff face and there isn’t anything there other than some junk jasper. Now I hope no other people go up there and attempt the same thing. I’ve been all over those rim rocks. There isn’t anything left worth a damn. Well… other than my spots that I gutted haha.

Looks like you need a Batman to patrol bat cave and save the rock hounding public.

It's always better to have a person with you for a plethora of reasons. I think I am good company and I bring snacks. Crap happens and she may have tested the rope and it was fine, but putting her full weight probably caused it to shift out of place.
I hope she makes a good recovery

Oh, I polished the smaller of the cut sides of the moss agate and it looks cute as a button. When you illuminate it, you can see the mossiness

Give the person a banana so they have more potassium and the mosquitoes will go after him. You don't need to be the fastest, just faster that the other guy.
