Hey gang! I’m heading to Vegas this weekend with my hubs and the in-laws, was wondering if there were any neat rockhounding spots (or even a shop) in the general area? Don’t think any of them are quite as interested in finding a rock in the desert heat 😂 but I do have a collection of rocks that I’ve collected or other people have brought me from different places around the US and the world, so I’d love a neat Nevada rock!
(Doesn’t have to be beautiful, tumbled, polished, or fancy - just something of local origin!)

There is a site that the local Gem club has at these coordinates. 36.20824° N, 114.69618° W, a bit off North Shore Road, east of Las Vegas on the way to Fire Valley State Park. Christmas Tree Agate in the area… I collected a bunch while there…finishes nicely.

Keep in mind that to reach the area that you do need to pay to enter the Lake Mead National Recreational Area.

(Doesn’t have to be beautiful, tumbled, polished, or fancy - just something of local origin!) Most the areas around here have been turned in to National Monuments or are off limits for other reasons.
I have found common opal, barite, fossilized fish poop, galaxy stone, jasper, perlite, etc. in the Henderson are right next to Las Vegas. Just outside of Las Vegas there are some fossils, garnet schist, garnet amphibolite, garnet in quartz, actinolite asbestos specimens, selenite, minor turquoise, quartz crystals, etc.
Although, the best collection area around here is the Goodsprings District (about 40 miles from here) where I find copper-silver ores, fossils, occasionally true onyx (black chalcedony), some nice quartz, barite (white, and blue), acanthite, druzy stones, orthoclase, etc.
Many of the areas will require a high clearance vehicle to reach.
Our club is going to Gemfield this weekend, which the whole area around there (Goldfield District) is rich in great minerals, but is about 3 hours away. I don't plan to go there this weekend since I will be up that way next month anyway.
If you would like, I can get you to somewhere to collect. I have taken people from this board, and others out, several times before.

Thanks so much, friend! I’ll pop back in again and message you once I know what our plans fully are (sis in law hasn’t said much); it doesn’t need to even be a semi-precious or “fabulous” find, just a little pretty stone!

I would go with the copper-silver ore then, which is really nice stuff and makes great cabs. If you want to stick closer to Vegas, then the galaxy stone.
