I am going to South Dakota for a day of collecting before driving to Crawford NE to meet up and collect with my Rockhounding club. I originally planned to stay in Hot Springs and collect at the French Creek campground area, but have seen so much positive information on this forum about the Railroad Buttes area. It’s not too late to change my plans. So what are you thought…Railroad Buttes or French Creek? Thanks for taking your time to post a reply.

Personally, I like both areas. I have a tendency to hound out at Railroad Buttes because it's closer to my house in Rapid City! If you go to the Buttes, there's a West Buttes and an East Buttes...both are fun. Down by Fairburn, you used to be able to drive out to the rockbeds going through the French Creek campground. Now, you have to wade across the creek and walk out to the beds. I don't think the hike is too bad really. I don't think you could go wrong with either one...

It’s a toss up and I will probably go to French Creek area unless our club trip is cancelled due to the wildfire outside Crawford. I appreciate your input.

I heard there was a recent fire down in the French Creek/Fairburn area. Not sure if it was on private property, or in the grassland. If it was in the grassland, it'll help out the hounding!
