Here is my off the cuff question for the day Blue slag found in Leland are called Leland Blue, but anywhere else the exact same slag cant be called that or people stroke out Leland Blue can be Blue, Grey, Green .... maybe other colors but Blue Slag anywhere else is just Blue Slag Hexagonaria on the other hand can be called a Petoskey anywhere you find it Just a little food for thought, i always laugh when i see Facebook asking if they found Leland Blues I get it i just thought this would be fun to see the responses lol little poke the hornet nest post to head into the weekend Hope everyone was an amazing weekend Ryan

Ryan...I will say I have heard a few people get a little "twitchy" when Hexogonaria...which aren't actually "Petoskey", called Petoskey! LOL
(To me...they're all Petoskey! LOL)
Around here, we have Fairburn Agates. They're mostly found on the grasslands. However, they can be found in The Black Hills. Some people get bent out of shape and say those are actually "Hills Agates"...but to me, they're ALL Fairburns!

Now wait just a minute Ryan and Jason! As somene who was born and grew up in Petoskey (probably the only one on the forum?), I can say that some people in that area take the "Petoskey Stone" name very seriously and say that only the particular species that is found in Petoskey qualifies. I think the chamber of commerce in Petoskey put out a statement to that effect a couple years ago. As I recall, to figure out which species it is you have to count the number of lines in a certain part of the "eye" or some such thing (to do that you need a really good specimen and a magnifying glass). As for me, I am not that particular and will take them where ever I can find them. Personally, I have never got the Leland Blue thing, but that may just be me. I did find some very dark green slag in Petoskey last year but my bag was full enough.

I’m guessing it mostly boils down to people trying to preserve the value of their specimens. I currently live in small town WI in a region that has been economically depressed since the early 1900s (was a logging area, never recovered after that), and there is a LOT of local specialty pride! Of course, every town around here is promoting the same specialties (hunting, fishing, hiking) but they all treat it like it’s special and unique to them *shrugs*
I think it’s the same deal as what jasper claims do where they have a unique name for virtually identical material from the same deposit… makes it more valuable. But in the case of petoskey and Leland you have an entire town taking pride in something they are known for, rather than just 1-2 claim owners.
Extra note: probably obvious to most people but for those that have little experience with small towns… having a local specialty like it’s not Leland unless it comes from Leland means tourists coming in to get the “real” stuff. Most small towns in the upper Midwest are pretty much entirely dependent on tourist income.

I was hounding in Upper Michigan last week and was approached by a gent and he asked if there were Petosky stones on this beach.
I told him that it was pretty unlikely and that most folks were there looking for agates.
He said that he was unfamiliar with that word ... punchline for this tale was that we were at Agate Beach Park.
