I should have known that the eyes on these agates are only skin deep (saw that on that expensive one a web site) but for some reason I thought I would cut this one up and make some cabs. Eyes gone.

I still may have a chance to redeem myself as I have the two end pieces that I think, if I am carefull, I can polish them and keep the eyes and have a decent cab. Still, this one is nice looking I think. Thanks pebblesky for sending the agate to me. Next up is some of the neprite. Better not mess that up.

First photo is the original agate (lower right one). Second photo is cut on dop. Last three are polished. The side view shows the only "eyes" left on the rock. The center quartz portion is different. I don't know if there are crystals with planes at different angles or what but two areas undercut slightly and you can see light reflect off of them beneath the surface of the cab. Lots of small pits around the brown material.

Oops the eyes are so gone. The details on the side are pretty nice.

The yellow layers tend to be very thin and pretty soft. I guess they are also the only affordable ones for tumbling.

Recently I saw a picture of a Gobi Eye Agate in the matrix. Asking for four digits (in US$), which is beyond wild to me. Apart from the price, the eyes seem to be deep and the green crust seems to be super thin.
