Do any of you use an app for rock identification? I'm new to the rocks in my area, so I'd like to have a bit of assistance, if anyone knows of a decent one. Thanks!

Here are a couple

The apps are pretty much worthless unless they are super obvious to begin with. They cannot determine identifying features such as hardness, density and streak.

I agree with James. I've never heard of those apps being worth a darn really...

I agree with James. I've never heard of those apps being worth a darn really... I have even heard of people taking pics of Styrofoam cups and the apps claim they are quartz.

Birdie...one of the SUPER difficult parts of IDing rocks from around here is they're "non-specific". Eventually you'll learn the differences between jaspers, cherts, agates, etc. For the most part, you'll only get the "general" IDs of rocks around these parts...

jasoninsd whoa, fancy labels! I’ve gotten to the point where I am doing some kind of granitoid, metasedimentary something, opaque chalcedony, quartzy whatever… only things that get anything close to names are things I am certain of at a glance such as basalt, unakite, or local pink sandstone. Not even sure if I am looking at a generic jasper or something more specific with the various weathering I find, so it’s all just chalcedony until I open it up 😆 big suspected moss agate nodule ended up being brecciated chalcedony in red jasper. What I thought was just layered (not banded) chalcedony ended up having brecciated agate inside… easier to just call it all chalcedony til I cut it lol

Yeah - I was out at the Buttes again today, and my friend brought over a rock and asked what I thought it was. I looked at it very carefully 🤔 and said "well....that's what they call a pretty rock".

Just send to me. If I keep them, you know they are good. If I send them back, I’ll even give you a name for them. Can’t promise it’ll be accurate though 😂

That's hilarious! I went hounding with my wife at The Buttes on Sunday. Three times she was a "stones throw" away from me (pun intended) and asked me what "this is"...each time I said, "A rock!" LOL
