Hello everybody, I have just joined the forum. I'm pretty excited to learn some new things and share what knowledge I have. Background - I was never really into rocks when I was a kid, teen, or young adult. Now that I am middle aged (can't believe I'm saying that) I have grown a fascination with rocks. I'm fascinated by the idea of holding something in my hand that is millions of years old. As a native Michigander, we camp fairly often, typically 3 times per year. When I had booked a camping trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, I had no intention of gaining another hobby. I remember being in awe of the rocks I was seeing. I've been hooked (fishing pun lol) ever since.
5 years later I'm looking in local streams for rocks on my lunch break! I make trips regularly to collect along the southern Lake Michigan shore, as it is closer to home. I made an enclosed box out of an unused outdoor sink where I have a Dremel that runs in as well as a water dripper. I started polishing by hand (I have experience with grinders from the tool and die industry). I have since graduated to a CabKing 6 and I love it. It's an amazing tool! (Also an expensive tool)
If I were asked what I was looking for, my main goal would be Agates. As for being in SW Michigan, I have no misconception that I'm looking in the wrong place, but I've found enough "Cold Water" agates to keep my hope alive. I appreciate all rocks and minerals, but definitely prefer the Jaspers and Unakites.
Thanks for having me and I'll talk to you soon.

Welcome from Missouri. If I can find Lake Superior Agates down here, you should be able to get lucky in southern Lake Michigan! I think the glaciers took a slight curve to the west.
