Sometimes when I go rockhounding I am looking for someone else. I mentally prepare myself before I go by thinking, "these rocks are for Earthdog" or "these are for Sands". Usually I find the most outstanding rocks that way, because I am not looking for myself. Today I went rockhounding for Ron (Michiganrocks).
It was a good day for hounding, because our first rain in about 6 months came last night. The rain made everything clean and sparkly (we pray for rain here in the high deserts of New Mexico and celebrate when they come...). It was a cool, mild day, and I found myself heading for the West side of the Rio Puerco. I usually collect on the East side.
I ended up on the "Indian Highway" about 60 miles East of Albuquerque, then on to BLM land. I wish I'd had my GPS with me, because I may never find the "road" again. It was a barely visible dirt trail high up on the mesa, parallelling the Rio Puerco. There I found the most beautiful petrified wood and agate very similar to the Coyote Agate I found near Pedernal Peak. The road was literally paved with wood.
I will clean up the rock and post photos tomorrow and you guys will see what I mean. Every color of the rainbow! I'm stoked! S
PS: Anamchara, your box will be mailed on Wednesday.

Oooh! I love rockhuning right after a rain too, or even during a rain. It sure does make the gemstones show up. Sounds like a great hunt. Show us the pics!!!!!!!....mel

That is some nice looking wood. You'll have to have a "hunting for stoner" day. Either that, or invite me to come along-or do you allow that?

Wow beautiful wood Susan!! I didn't know the New Mexico wood was quite that colorful. Where do you get your permit for collecting on indian land and is there any fee? Very difficult to get permission to collect on indian land in Calif, Oregon or Nevada! Umm and don't wanna be a party pooper but if you stray onto federal land and if those hunks of wood are fist sized you sure don't want to have a ranger catch you cause petrified wood has a bag limit on government land and the wood bag limit is 25 pounds plus one piece. That looks to be about four times the bag limit. You naughty gal you! *W*.....mel

Mel - I didn't collect this wood on Indian Land - collected it on BLM land. Went right through a gate that said, "ENTERING PUBLIC LANDS". I am perfectly aware of the rules and regulations regarding collection of petrified wood, and I would say this parcel doesn't weigh much more than 25 pounds. I'll bet I could get it all in one Flate Rate box. Isn't it interesting how "they" don't specify how much that one last piece can weigh? What, me NAUGHTY? Never! Thanks for asking. S

Oops, sorry Susan misread your note. Have always been interested in how access is obtained to Indian land though. If you ever hear anything on that please let me know. Thought I'd mention that bag limit thing as there are so many newbies here on the board who might not know about the bag limit and coming west, could possibly get themselves into trouble. Guess your fists are tinier than mine and that's what threw me off. I just had to collect fist sized rocks for the educational cases and since I had to carry the rock uphill out of a mine pit I was curious how much a fist sized rock weighed and they were all a pound or more. Guess that's why a pack full seemed so heavy. Fifty small hunks weighed about 65 pounds! *L*. Anyway looked like a bunch of hunks in your pic and if they weighed about a pound each they would've been pretty heavy. I think that one piece thing is interesting too. I guess that lets you tap into the 250 pound per year thing so you can get a big log section if you find one. Never has helped me though because everytime I find a log its like a thousand pounds and unmovable even if I tried for a permit *L*. Guess that's the way luck goes.....mel

My fists are so small I could get them in my mouth, where my foot is frequently located. Can you relate? I did have to cross Navajo land to get to this collecting site, and, you're right, the rules regarding collecting on The Rez are very strict. There is NO COLLECTING ALLOWED - no rock, no firewood, certainly no artifacts. In fact, one can't even take photos while on Indian Land. I'm sure the regulations are the same everywhere. It bums me out every time I go to Acoma Sky City because I can't even take my digital camera on their land. If they stop you with a camera they will confiscate it. I do have a Forest Resource permit which allows me to collect minerals in the state of New Mexico. BTW - 25 pounds plus one piece is about all I can carry in my collecting sack... K? Susan

SUsan- Ever try talking to the tribal heads- We have a fossil site near us on Indian land- Everybody told use it was off limits- I went to the tirbal offices- talked to them- and recieved written permission to remove 1 five gallon bucket of material- I was also told that nobody bothers to ask first- that is why they have the rules in place- but that if you ask- often times permission is granted (if the request is reasonable) may be worth a go?

Hey, you bet I was thrilled to get that box from Susan! I've been out of commision for a while, but hope to get back to tumbling soon. I'm going to cut some shaped pieces from some of it first though.
Thanks Susan! Ron
