Those look great John. I recognize a lot of those stones. Ya know, you could probably buy some chains in bulk and if you put the cabs on chains, you could easily get $25. Just a thought.

What no boulder opals??? Sands, are you using premade rings for the bails? they all look so uniform in size & shape - you could also use jump rings as well - but yours look much better... How long does it take to drill a hole?

Tweet Bouldar Opal does not make a good pendant- the matrix is just to soft- John- Outstanding man- I think a nice chain would work well- or maybe have 2 styles- a Leather corded necklace for $20 and a sterling chained one for $35?? give the customer a choice?

That's something I want to start doing, but I'm not sure what kind of drill to look for. I have a dremel, not sure what the power rating is on it, but where do you get the bits for drilling? And what size/style bits do you use to get through the rocks? If I were looking to start from scratch and get a drill and bits, what would I look for - - any suggestions?

Sands...I'm one of those people that if I saw your cabs at a show, I'd buy one right then & there. Bit here's an idea... Don't buy chains! The cord is enough. Hang a small assortment on some to display and let buyers know the cord is free. That way they can put the cab on instantly & people at the show will see & ask where they got it. (Make everyone you know at the show wear one too!) I'm pretty picky about the type of chains I wear & why would you want to go to the expense of adding one if you could get them to sell without? OR...have a small assortment of chains available for an additional upcharge. MY unwanted 2 cents!

Hey polished, here's a good place to get diamond drill bits. lopacki.com/drills/When drilling through stone, keep the bit/stone in a small tub of water, and use an up/down motion with the drill bit. Starting the hole can be tricky because the bit wants to walk around, so use a light touch at first until the bit gets started. Once it's started, then apply pressure and release, and just keep repeating this until the bit goes through. I usually drill about 3/4 of the way through from front to back, then turn the stone around and finish the hole drilling from back to front. This way you avoid blowing a chunk of the stone out off the backside. As for size, .75mm is okay for jump rings but if you're going to use leather cord, use a 1.25-2mm bit. When you buy your bits, buy more than just one of each size as they don't last very long.

Sands - I would use black leather. get a 25 yard roll for pretty cheap. You can put cord terminators (little glue on coils with clasps) or even use two slip knots to make an adjustable size. The leather looks more young and hip. It also is a nice contrast to the color in the stones.
Polished - I use some .075 and some 1.0 mm diamond bits from cyberrockhound.com. The are sold in 3-packs for just a few dollars. Each drill bit last me for 5 to 10 stones. In fact usually lasts until the 2nd or 3rd hard agate.
I also use the tapered diamond dremmel bit (about $10 at Lowes). I use this one when I want to pass 1.5 mm leather through the stone. I use the 0.75mm when I am just drilling a little hole for an screw-stem with an eye.
I have a Dremel drill press and some bead vises, but usually just hold the stone just below the surface of a sink of water and drill by hand.

Wow. Those holes look so darn clean! I've been putting off drilling but think I'll try it now. I got the stuff to make the drill press setup posted elsewhere on the board - but you're definitely right to take Zotika's advice, he does awesome work! I'm glad you mentioned that. It's also nice to know the bit sizes.
I look forward to hearing how you do at the show. Good luck!

thanks all --- and as many times as iv drilled holes useing the press for my dremal this has been the fastest and made nicer holes i did like zot said and held the dremal in my hand and it was a pleasure id say in a matter of an hr sittin at kims bench i did prob 20 some pendent holes it usta take me like 20 mins a hole when i used the press-- and yes i went through like maybe 5 bits but for the speed it was well worth 5 bucks in bits hahaha
i think im gonna get like 10 chains for people that want them and try and go with the black waxed cord i have a giant roll sittin here and it was cheap enuff to give away with each one

Great bunch of cabs, Sands. Are you drilling the holes after the cab is polished? Or a few stages back? Just thinkin' the bit might wander less on a rougher surface, and you're not messin' up a finished surface.

hey rich your right i did have to buff up acouple i scratched up starting the hole so it would be wizer next time to drill after rough shapping them then finish the cab cause it would grip better on the rough rock
