Okay, I got my rocks in the mail today, thanks Gil for getting to the post office early. Did you send 4 or 5 flat raters? I got 4 today and only one had a big hole in the side. It was the box with the larger pieces so I don't think I lost any. So far there looks to be some promising material. The first 2 pics are the only nice large rocks I brought home. These are from the smaller pieces. Next time I know to be more selective and look for the larger pieces. If anybody wants to trade some tumbling sized pieces for some larger ones, let me know. Tweetie, the Bigfoot is a sweet little grinder. It's got all the wheels you'd find on a Pixie and it's small enough to take on a road trip. I was so glad Don had brought it with him because by Monday night I was going through withdrawls from not being able to cut cabs for 4 days. I did 5 cabs that night and got up the next morning and did another one. I don't remember who got the cabs, but maybe they will post pics of them.

Hey Stefan - I think we are going to do next years trip a week earlier than this past trip. Jan and Trey were pretty busy with the spring break crowds and they ask us to move it up a week so they could spend more time with us. I haven't heard exactly what date it will be yet though...

Dan, I really wanted to go, mainly to meet all you folks, but March-May is a busy time for me and with drive time that's a two week trip for me. I've got my club gem show, bird work at the Raptor Center, and all my fire control work up at the ranch to take care of. Plus the old being retired on a fixed income thing makes the gas/motel prices kind of a daunting thing. I sat down this year and figured that to be about a $2000 trip and heck, I've already got more Woodward material than I'll cut in my lifetime so I just couldn't justify the expenses.....mel

Stefan, I heard 1st week of April as well. We had talked about 1st week of March, but I think they fear it will still be kind of questionable weather. We had one day there where it never really warmed up past about 60. It was downright cool in the morning until the sun came out.
For those that fear the cost, if you could get a plane ticket to one of the local airports - Lubbock, Midland-Odessa, or El Paso, I can guarantee you'll be picked up and delivered to the right place. Heck, if you could get a plane ticket to Dallas or even Albequerque we could even (probably) get you out there as well.

60's? ? I would KILL for 60's!!!! Mel- It would be great if you could make it- I'm gonna tent it- We can stay right on the ranch RIGHT???- all I need is some running water (yea I have to shower everyday- sorry but I just can't function without a daily shower- oh and you sure don't want to be downwind of me if I haven't had one!!! OK I can go 2 days without one- but no more than that trust me on this one) oh and a place to sit by the fire- I'm driving down with my parents (to houston) so I'll be traveling a bit heavier (gonna carry my hounding tools rather than mail em down beforehand) Dan has offered to drive me to the ranch from houston (gosh I hope he plans on driving me back to houston- it would be a shame if I got stranded at the ranch). Geeze look at me- I'm already bouncing off the walls- Sorry folks- I'll go sit in the corner and wait for my box of rocks

hahaha... No ... bringing you back to Houston is not part of the deal..hehehe.. just kiddin'. ;D Of course I'll bring you back!
The camp grounds are all around the cabin so if you're in a tent you still won't miss the fun.
Facilities: This last trip, the bathrooms were for use only by the cabin folks because the septic system can only handle so much. But Sheri mentioned that the Woodwards plan to build facilities for the campers as well. Check with Sheri for more info or updates.
Will you be able to wait for a whole year without going nuts Stefan? hehehe... I don't blame you bud... I want to go back tomorrow. ;D

Go NUTS--- Heck I'm already there-- Just picture this *Dan picks up Stefan EARLY in the morning- 2 miles into the drive we hear "Are we there yet?" then" HOw Much Longer??" then "come on drive faster!!!" As Dan Pulls wearily into the ranch we see Stefan riding in the bed of the truck- tongue hanging out- strings of drool and slobber all down the side of the truck- Stefan jumps out of the truck- grabs a hammer- pees on a cactus- and starts smacking every rock in sight!!" Excited- No not me!

*LMAO* Stefan, I thought you were gonna say that as Dan pulled into the Woodward Ranch, the gang was surprised to notice Stefan tied over the hood of Dan's car because he said " Are we there yet?" just one too many times! *L* Dan, I hope you're a far gentler and more patient sort than I am. That drive between Houston and the Woodward Ranch ain't "That" short *L*....mel

Mel, it didn't cost me anywhere near $2k and I was only gone 5 days but had an experience that will last a lifetime. Stefan, have you ever been camping? I mean real camping, where you are out in the middle of nowhere and the only way to wash is to jump into an ice cold stream. There were people there who needed that daily shower and there were the real campers. It wasn't til the flies wouldn't leave me alone that I finally gave in and took a shower! Just kidding. Oh, and the first thing you should do before getting into Dan's truck is check the tires!

Ed-- NOPE-- I don't do the "real Camping" thing well- I can live without Electricity, lights, radio, TV, Hot food, Cold food- but I gotta have my Water- I don't even care if it's cold water- as long as I'm clean!!! But don't worry-- I'll figure out something (hmm just saw some of those Pet Wipes cleaning wipes on sale- Hmmm Stefan is a nice guy- but he smells like a wet dog!!!) Got it- Check the Tires!!!

Just to verify the dates.................Jan asked that we schedule it the first week of April. They want to spend the whole time with us. Showing us where to hunt, some special places, how to cut some of thier agate, and more! There will be a huge BBQ the first night we are there hosted by the Woodwards and Jan will have t-shirts made for each of us attending. I will start the sign up sheet in a new thread so those of you who want to book flights way in advance can do so. See all of you in April 2008!!

Ed, I don't really travel like most folks. I don't fly, drive short days so it's fun, and love back road traveling so my route to the Woodward is at least 3000 miles round trip. That makes gas for my fourby $600 alone, then if I figure in at least 6 motel stops, two weeks food, camping fees and fees for at least a couple hundred pounds of rock ( I'm optimistic!) plus every rock shop along my route and misc side trips to hunt rocks ( my trips are sort of rockabouts as I tend to wander a bit). You're right, just recalculated and if I skimp on the rock shops and stink a bit, I can cut it to $1830 *L*. Really, that's cutting my Texas trip short too as I usually like to go further east for palm and crinoidal limestone. Plus if we go that first part of April, I'll just have to hit the Deming show ( best fieldtrips ever!) the following weekend. Believe me, I am still considering it even though, as I said, I really have a bunch of Woodward stuff already. The main thing holding me back is the ranch and the Raptor Center as springtime is when all our fundraisers are and my fire control work at the ranch is mandatory and time consuming....mel

Believe me...........it is worth it even if it is just for the friendships!! I can not put into words what I felt! Here, let me say this.....................Most of the time I feel different than others I am around, they think my connection to rocks is silly but at the ranch, I felt a part of! I was not different! I had people just like me surrounding me. I didn't want it to end!! Does that make sense? There was even more to it........the sharing of the finds. Even though I have Woodward rock, just seeing the excitement and smiles of others finding the beautiful stuff made me feel good inside. I felt the same excitement for them!! I know I sound crazy but those of you who think it is just a rock hunt.................................you are way off! It is so much more........something you have to experience for yourself. Believe me --- it is worth every minute and every penny!!

I wasn't going to post today (have been running my mouth/fingers overboard for three days) but I HAVE to second what Sheri said. Over the past year I pretty much turned into a Hermit, but I was laughing and smileing the whole time while with these great people. It was a real shot in the arm.
