As a kid, I remember finding quite a bit of "fools gold" on train tracks. I don't think I'd ever throw them into a barrel though. They look pretty neat left alone (little cubes).
If I'm ever near train tracks again and find some more, I MIGHT give throwing them into a barrel a try, but I really don't think they'd look very nice in the end.
Cabbing them might be a different story though.

I am glad to know I am not the only one who looks at the rock decorations at businesses and goes... ooo there's a pretty one.

Alice, In our part of the woods, our tracks have gravels with quartz, agates, fossils, and petrified wood. The fossils and petrified wood are "silicified" (the same stuff as quartz) so they can be tumbled just like agates. I think pyrite is too soft to be tumbled. But I should wouldn'tmind finding some! ralph

The next time I'm near some train tracks and find some fools gold, I'll keep you in mind and send some to you.
We also have a lot of quartz, slate, and a lot of unidentified stuff (stuff "I" can't identify anyway)
But a trip to the tracks might not be for a long while. My youngest goes where I go, and he's still not aware of "danger" (he'll be 3 in May).

alice, look for an abandoned railroad track. should be safer... there is one here that goes right next to the highschool that is no longer in use. can't wait to get out there.

I've found that the RR track beds are a great place to find rocks that are not native to my home area, and some are quite interesting. Most RR ballast around my home are gabbros, but there are some really gorgeous granitic-based gneisses in some places that would definitely be worth a roll in the tumbler.
