Here's what I've found so far:
The coastline is sharply indented, with many seaside cliffs and miles of sandy beaches. The island's rocks and sand are so red that they have become a distinctive symbol of P.E.I.
Specifically, PEI is underlain entirely by rocks correlative with those of the Pictou Group of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. On the Island, these deposits of sandstones, shales and conglomerates are informally termed the "Prince Edward Island Redbeds."

While you're on PEI, stop into the Merchantman Inn in Charlottetown and have a chat with the bartender while enjoying some refreshments. I found them to be my best source of information on where to find everything on PEI.

ps. I drove my motorhome pulling my CJ7 over the bridge/causeway onto the island. There is no charge for it. When it was time to come home, I discovered that it was going to cost me $100 to get off the island. I nearly told them to meet their newest resident because I wasn't leaving. Ended up taking the ferry to Nova Scotia instead. Only cost $65 to do that and it took me right to where I wanted to go and saved me a day of driving. Don't get me wrong, I love PEI and would return in a heartbeat!
