Hi all! I'm gonna try to go on the 16th. The owner just opened the place and gave me a few samples to cut/polish. I have to admit...this isn't the typical rose quartz I've seen before. It's clearer with few fractures...more like pink lemonade. Will post photos when I take some! Here's a link to info about the location in Georgia. Honestly, the place looks really cool. dixieeuhedrals.net/content/hogg.php

Stephan, My hubby is on the mend from major surgery...I'll be likely going by myself. :-( So not sure how adventurous I'll get to be.
The hurricane reminants that passed through here has made everything soggy and buggy. I sure hope I don't get chiggers this time! I have a few samples I'm going to attempt to cut today...will post pics asap.
If all goes well, I may have some extra to send to folks. I know I already have broken quartz points that are really VERY nice to tumble. I have a batch in the tumbler now that shape beautifully! (They range from icy clear to milky...with few fractures and so far no peeling!) (they're in 1000 now...so should be ready soon! The rose quartz I've seen is rather clear...nothing like I've seen so far...so it should tumble and cut beautifully. With only two pieces I'm terrified to start the first cut. Gosh I hope I don't mess up the "star" part!
Promise to post some pics soon! Life's been so crazy lately! So much to do!

Keep us updated- I have not seen any real good rose in a long time! I have a piece that is so dark but like you say- It is my only one and I would hate to cut into it a screw it up! I have another lighter chunk but it has a HUGE black tourmalin crystal running through it and there is no way I'm gonna ruin that!

Here's an ebay listing of a piece of the star rose quartz from the Hogg Mine owned by Dixie Euhedrals. I'll be going to his mine this Saturday and will be sure to give you guys updates. cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6545812656&category=4841&tc=photoI cut two pieces today, but so far am not pleased with the "star" part. It just isn't readily apparent. I'm afraid I've cut it wrong. Gonna try another piece before the weekend hopefully.

OMG that is amazing- I was soooo tempted to bid (actually had the mouse on the Buy it now button- BAd steffy) You have to go a get some for us! I'm totally out of rock cash (blew the last of it on my grinder) but if you get some stuff that looks even half as good- well I'll have to find the money somewhere!

It's so expensive cause it's star rose quartz.... looks like star saphire when it's cut...
If I find some that's not the star kind this weekend...I'll let you know

Here are the pics! I had a ball collecting on Saturday. We had quite a downpour during the day that soaked me to the bone! It was welcome, because of the heat. but boy did I get muddy! The above image is a shot of a HUGE chunk...a bit smaller than a basketball. Lots of good tumbling material in that piece. Between the fractures are large chunks of clear/fracture free material. Good tumbling material here! Gonna cut cabs with some of these too! More... Nice piece...not sure what I'll do with it...but not like anything I've seen before! Tourmaline I found... Beryl (Aquamarine) other folks found - Matt & I both found smaller pieces, but didn't photograph them yet...

Most of it is too fractured, however, there are several pieces that aren't that bad and I may be able to make TINY cabs from them. I thought that if I can do it, they'd make nice tiny accent stones in a setting.
Don't think it will tumble...just too delicate a material....but will know more once I start trying to shape some of it.

Our own Gemmaster has been to the Hogg mine and is selling the "Pink Lemonade". So check out the For sale by members page! His picks are unbelievable too! And his charges differ with the clarity of the stone. Some almost as clear as glass and large too. It's an amazing mine. Trying to get the wife to go down to central Georgia for a "Weekend getaway for two" if she'll buy that "Oh look hon! There's that mine everyone is talking about!"....bit or not. But, I'm going to try!!

I went to hogg mine a couples of months ago. I must say i was not prepared for what i was about to see. The owner very nice guy told me the Rose Quartz was everywhere and beleive me it was everywhere. You drive up and your parking right on it. Walk a short ways and be ready to see more Rose Quartz than you could have imagined. Very nice tumbling sizes all the way up to huge boulder sizes that you'd need a truck to get them out. It was a very nice trip, have a couple of pics from the mine. It's a place that i would recommend going.
