About 10 miles north of Kingman AZ on the Stockton Hill Rd you can dig for onyx. Fire agate near Eds Camp at the Black mountians..off I-40 between Kingman and Needles....and also near close to Eds Camp ....all of this info came from the Rockhounding Arizona book I just bought...

Phoenix, Thanks for the info. I just ordered that book online. I'm hoping there are some members here that have been to that area. Thanks again

I'll be down there next weekend, Have you had your trip yet Hawk? If so I'm curious to hear how it went- the mountains in that area are fascinating, I have to imagine there are some interesting things to be found around there. Not sure if I'll get any time out for collecting this trip, but I always keep an eye out.

Well my trip last week was pretty interesting, didn't get any collecting around Laughlin proper, but did spen a day over in AZ around Wikieup, in the Big Sandy river valley- found lots of nice quartz and pet wood, along with some really pretty jasper-ish looking stuff. A local told me as I was leaving that there are geodes in a lot of the draws, next time I'll be looking for them.
On the trip home I went through this little area at the north edge of the Mohave desert that looks like an old mining district- now more of an OHV area, but came across some of the most interesting and colorful stones I've seen there.
Also drove along Lake Isabella in the southern Sierras came across a rod cut that was mostly mica schist, but with some really interesting quartz/agate veins.

I was just in the area and spent a day in the town of Oatman AZ. Very old area. Saw a lot of wild burros in town begging for handouts. Walked around the area north of Oatman a while but didn't find anything worthwhile. Next trip I will spend more time in the mountians around the area. If you get a chance please visit the town of Oatman....very nice spot with some great shops. We did find some good deals there..

Hawk,
You definitely should look around the Oatman area. First off Oatman is a really cool old west town with one or two rock shops as well as other shops and a few places to grab a bite to eat. Go to the Goldroad Mine, if you are into mines it is well worth the small admission cost. A miner (now a tour guide as it isn't a working mine anymore) there pointed me in the right direction to find fire agate. You can find fire agate on the other side of Sitgreaves Pass (you go through this pass as you head east away from Oatman) After you start descending look for some turnouts, park (watch out, these roads are narrow and winding) and start searching down towards the canyon as well as the creek beds. You WILL find bubbly white chalcedony here and hopefully some with the telltale brown indicating fire. I have two prized pieces from this region. (one chalcedony rose and one brilliant fire agate)
Ed's Camp (a few miles down at the base of the hills) has been closed for a couple of years, it used to be a fee dig area. But the creek bed always has fire, the hard part is finding a place to park and not trespassing.

Hey Hawk, When you were down near Ed's camp- Why was it hard to find a place to park & is old Ed still alive? Thanks, Slim
