My Mom is going on a trip around the East Coast, and wants to search for Emeralds or any precious stones. She's not really a Rock Hound, more of a Jewlery Hound. She said she could onlly find one mine that opened in March in North Carolina. I was wondering if any of you know of more year round mines. She's also going to be in New York and a couple of other states but I'm not sure where.
Any information would be appreciated.

Hddenite NC between Statesville and Hickory NC Off I 40. Emerald Hollow Mine. All mines in NC are open year round, at least the ones I've been to. If she's going anywhere near Cherokee NC there is a great place to sluice buckets. Some are seeded and some are not. I've had good luck with both kinds. Emerald Hollow is inexpensive and it looks like it may be going downhill. I say this only because I went to it two years in a row and this year it wasn't as enjoyable as last year. It was better last year because I didn't need a translator to find a good spot to dig. I could be wrong but I think it may be under new ownership. But, if she does go to the mine she can pay $15 for digging, creeking, and sluicing with a comp bucket included. Digging is an all day affair and if she wants emeralds she needs to ask where is a good place to dig for Mica! The younger staff will show her where and all she has to do is follow the mica. Follow it deep enough and she'll find some. But, the better mines are around Franklin but even some of those are no longer like they were. Google Franklin, NC and look for a posting by a member of a club who has traveled the state checking out all the mines and it's very comprehensive. I hope she enjoys her trip.
