If your around Tucson try taking I-19 to Amado then head over to Arivaca. The hills around the Arivaca lake are covered with small clear/white agates that look like melted glass.
From the Ruby road turn off, all the way past the lake there are agates everywhere. I also picked up several nice chunks of jasper there.
There is also some green and white granite looking rock that I'll be tumbling soon.

Sounds like those White stones are classic Arizona Desert Chalcedony. Thanks for sharing!

It could be similar as i ahvent been there, but if it looks like melted wax, another common name would be chalcedony roses. They are formed from hot spring like actively. The type found out Fourth July butte, is more like a nodule, or banded/fortification agate. Those type would be similar more to Laguna, Condor, Lake Superior agates.

Yes these are a nodule and yes they do have the banding ls agates have. All mine are mostly small range 1 inch and lower some up to 2 1/2 inch range.Got about 1/2 5 gallon bucket in 1 1/2 hours on surface. That was after hiking for 2 1/2 hours and finding a handful while hiking . Then within site of the truck finding a patch of land that had two gullies running from each end of a huge rock mound they came together 1500 feet or more in front of the rock mound forming an inaccessible area where no vehicle could go. It was fun. George

I picked up lots of the white/clear chalcedony at Saddle Mountain. Some has the gold and brown bands in it & hopefully I can get it to show some fire if I grind it right.
I'd like to find a good, reasonably accessible place to look for more colorful agates/jaspers or Arizona pet wood. Any suggestions?

North Cave Creek Rd, Past Seven Springs/humbolt Mt. There are agate and jasper fields that streach 30 miles north. And with the big fire last year if i recall correctly(cave creek complex) it may be real good pickings. www.gemkoi.com/rockhounding-sites.htmIt very colorful jasper and agates in the area.

The maps are 1160x1600 res. If you broswer is resizeing the image to fit your sceen, you still should be able to enlarge the image to the correct 1160x1600, which is larger than most computer sceens. I made it that way so you can print it off. let me know and i can email you any of those maps.
