Thanks for posting the website as I love fire agate. One of these days I am going to make a trip to the opal hill mine in CA. If you can post up some of the the finds you found. I would love to see the fire agate and some of the gold you got. Tony

About time they updated that information! Thanks for posting the link HardrockM. That is a fun and plentyful collecting spot. Though i have seen more plain chalcedony come out of Black hills, it does produce nice fire the farther you get into the hills. Theres also a Black Hills near Deer Creek that produce similar fire agate as at deer creek.
Comeon Mike, when i go collecting fire agate, i am collecting by sunup, and done before lunch anyway. I done Deer creek a few times in half a day and came out with a few hundred pounds of fire collected just as float!

Yeah Nephrite, that sounds like motivation for me to get over the heat thing right? Man Shain that is a lot of fire!
Someone told me the mine at Deer Creek was closed, is that true Shain?

The deer creek location is not closed, however, the original mine has fallen in to complete disaray and will cost more in reclamation fees than whats left in gem grade fire agate. This top area too is full of rubell, and you see float as your drive up to it. Most float is white chalcedony with less than 25% sard. Out of a few hundred pounds of float, i would get maybe 5 pounds of decent fire, and a handful of gemgrade.
There are sevral Active claims in the area, Xona_fire has been mining some real nice fire agate from a lower location than the original mine, but i havent seen or heard from him this year, not sure whats up.
I would collect float only and have yet to take a camera, sorry. Maybe a will this year. It takes me forever to cut gem grade fire agates, and i have a batch sitting close by when insperation hits. I promise i will post lots of closes ups when i have a couple fine ones finished.

The only place I've ever been in Arizona is Tonopah (35 min west of Phoenix). We've gotten lots of Fire Agates in the Saddle Mountain area.
