;D Hopefully there won't be too many pics in this report, but I do hope everyone enjoys the pictorial trip!!! I decided to take off early this morning with my two daughters. We wanted to leave around 6AM but managed to get on the road around 7AM. Everything was going very good until we ran into a delay. A fatal accident that had the road blocked for two hours. We were just getting to it when Lifeflight was landing. To make a long story short, we managed to arrive at the Geode Beds around 1PM. (OUCH) Here's a shot of a few of the many Antelope we seen on the road out.
To get to the Geode Beds you drive along the old Pony Express Road. There are many markers on the way out. Thought I'd just throw a pic of the markers as well as a close-up of the plaque.
One of the main stops for the Pony Express riders was at Simpson Springs. Here's a shot of the old cabin, which of course has had a new roof put on it.
The desert here in Utah is wide open, hot, and usually windy. It was a typical drive out...DUSTY!
The Geode Beds is basically a pit.
The typical way to find the Geodes is to start digging and once you hit the pink clay layer, you usually start to find the Geodes. It's not easy work, but with persistence, you can usually find a decent clay layer which will yield some nice baseball size nodules. No trees around, no running water, not many people, but lots of cool looking ROCKS!!!
After breaking about 4 of these onsight, which I thought were going to be DUDS, I decided not to be too picky and to wait to get them home and take em' to my saw. It seemed like I was digging more of the Geodes with the purples in them. After about 3 hours of digging, I came home with 2 bucketfuls.
I really could've spent ALL DAY until dark digging, but my girls were becoming quite impatient and bored. They were Troopers, and I'm proud of them.
It was a very nice day and I was glad I got to spend the time with my girls. If anyone is interested in taking a trip out to the Geode Beds here in Utah, please Invite Me! I love the Utah Desert.
