My QT66 is in the basement of my RV and I leave the door open a fraction so I won't have any heat buildup down there. I knew it was going to freeze last night, they predicted temps. around 29 or 30 degrees. I figured the QT66 would be okay even with the door cracked open a bit. Well, I wake up this morning and the temp is 24 degrees! YIPES! Too dang cold for me to even go outside and check it! If it froze up, it froze up and I see no sense in ME freezing to go check it. Sun is coming up and it will warm up in another hour or so, so it will just have to wait til then. Temp already up 1 degree since I started typing this.
It's check the barrels day and I really hate to have to do that in the kitchen with buckets in the sink! Obviously, I don't have a sink in my basement. But I do have a water hose and it's to much easier to do it outside. Of course, this AM my water hose wouldn't do much good cause it's frozen! ;D
Temps that low are unusual here for this early in the winter. Usually don't have temps like that until Jan or Feb, and even then it's pretty rare. Hope this is not an omen of what is to come! I really, really hate the cold!

Brett, thanks for that info on the CE/Lortone drive shaft! I have dead CE tumbler for the same reason. Never had belt on it break, but the plastic drive pully broke. Have been trying to figure out how to fix it and you have solved that problem!

Perhaps I should ask this on the vendor discussion board, but it pertains to this thread... Last week I ordered 2 Lortone motor pulleys from The Rock Shed. On Wednesday I got the standard notice from FedEx that they had received the info on my shipment and they gave me a tentative delivery date of Saturday 12/4/04, and they gave me a tracking number. I was hospitalized on Friday due to infection of a nasty steam burn incurred at work on Monday, and when I got home from the hospital yesterday I checked the order at the FedEx site and found that they still have not received the order for shipment. No reply yet from The Rock Shed to an email enquiry sent yesterday afternoon. Have any of you had difficulties with this vendor? I'm wondering if Shawn might be having some sort of difficulties with health or family or whatever. I hope everything is okay out there in South Dakota...
Shalom, Mark

Hi Mark,
The Rock Shed comes highly recommended by this board and I can second that. Did you order online? Have you tried tracking the package?
I ordered my stuff on a Tuesday and received it that Saturday via postal service. If you haven't contacted Shawn already, you might want to. Here is his email addy: shawn@therockshed.com
Hope this is of some assistance. [glow=blue,2,300]Brett[/glow]

Brett,
Maybe I wasn't clear enough... checking the tracking number shows that FedEx hasn't yet received the package. My email inquiry to shawn@therockshed.com has gone unanswered thus far.

in our business we deal with deliveries all the time. a tracking # is not issued until they have the package so they have the package - my guess is they have lost or misplaced the package, delivered it to the wrong place or something. get with shawn - he can straighten it out. i have had some incidents where i'm pretty sure shawn never gets my e-mails because they are in the business name and probably get sent to spam. give him a call.

in our business we deal with deliveries all the time. a tracking # is not issued until they have the package so they have the package - my guess is they have lost or misplaced the package, delivered it to the wrong place or something. kim It might be dependent on the manner in which you make your transactions with FedEx. From the FedEx website: Dec 1, 2004 5:48 PM Package data transmitted to FedEx; package not in FedEx possession -------------------------------------- I've seen this with numerous purchases I've made online that were shipped via FedEx. On the day I receive the notice that gives the tracking number this is usually what I'll get if I try to track the package, and quite often I'll get it until the package is scanned at the first hub that it arrives at. What I seem to be seeing on this board is an un-needed knee-jerk response to rush to the defense of Shawn and The Rock Shed. If you read my initial post on the subject carefully, you'll see that I have neither accused nor condemned Shawn OR The Rock Shed. I am all too aware that sometimes stuff just 'happens'. If there's no response to my email by tomorrow I'll try to make contact by phone. I'm not as disappointed by not yet receiving my order as I might normally be, since I probably wouldn't bother to monkey with it right now even if I had it. I'm in enough pain from my burn and the ongoing debridement that I just don't care to be on my feet fooling with it. Shalom, Mark

mark i called a fed-ex representative and they verified you can have a tracking # and the package not be in their possession. they said someone can print a label off their computer before they pick it up. i'm sorry we are frustrating you so and sorry you are feeling bad. i've never had any difficulty with this vendor.

Mark, I'm really sorry to hear about your burn, hope it heals with no problems. Burns are so painful and seem to take so long to heal. Now ... About The Rock Shed ... I've placed my orders by calling the Rock Shed, couldn't ask for better people do deal with. The last time I ordered, I was told it could be awhile to get my order out as at that time Shawn and all the guys were at a rock show or something. The gal said she'd try to get it but was working alone. Perhaps it's a similar situation that's caused the delay. I'm going to assume your in quite a bit of pain and that is the reason you made this statement which causes you to resemble a turd! Your darn right members here will rush to the defense of a good vendor! They will also rush to the defense of this forum AND it's members. You were the one who asked. All they were trying to do was to assure you that Shawn will do good by you as has been their experience. No need to get huffy, if you didn't want the opinion, don't ask for it.

You know it is too cold to tumble, when your fingers go white and then go black. When also, the tip of your nose turns white and drips freeze on your mustache and when you smile tear out mustache hairs. When your eyes freeze open it is another signal it is time to do things differently.

Greetings All,
I finally found my own answer to this question yesterday. Came back from a weekend in Mobile visiting my Father, who will be 80 soon. My wife (8 months + pregnant now) and son (six years old as of this month and can't wait to be a bit brother) went with me, we had a good visit and such. Drove back home to North Mississippi Sunday, got back about 4:15 P.M, barely an hour of daylight left, so of course I just HAD to try and do something with the rocks. The outside thermometer read 38oF so I took my two QT12 barrels which I run at 60/90 out for washing/recharging, and yes, it was too d*mn cold to be running water over my hands ect. Some even froze on the metal lids as I was washing. But I did get the two loads washed and the QT12's recharged and going for another week. The other 4 QT6 barrels will have to wait until next weekend...Christmas day. At least I can get out with some more daylight and hopefully it will be above freezing so I can use the garden hose. Fun fun fun ;D

It hit -2 degrees F. here in S.E. Michigan last night. I've got a load in my 15 pound Thumlers with 2000 grit A.O. and enough sugar to make a moderately thick slurry at room temperature. This morning, before I left for work at about 7:30, I noticed that the load was really quiet -- but still tumbling. I assume if I had shut it off it would have frozen solid. Tonight it was 19 degrees when I got home and it sounded "normal" again.

we are going to sling back into 45F degrees by wednesday.....how weird is that?

We hit the 20's today so I managed to finish my Christmas shopping. We're going to start dropping again tomorrow and supposed to be in the -20's below by Thursday. Tomorrow's the first day of winter, only 91 days and counting until spring .. yay!!

It went all the way down to 68 degrees last night. My fair bride who compliments herself on her strength, was wrapped up in flannel sheets, two wool blankets and a comforter. We had to get a down featherbed to go over our mattresses. I couldn't sleep. She had three of our salamander heaters going and it was so hot I had to sleep on top of the mattress, sheets, and in the buff. I will admit, but not to her, it was a little chilly. She is worried about our banana trees. We just planted three of the real banana trees, the ones that do not grow Kalifornia bananas. The ones like the ears of corn in a jar that do not get bigger than three inches. Maybe it was a little chilly.
