Merry Christmas. I hope all your dreams come true, and they are what you want them to be. How do I write this.... A person came to the shop two weeks ago. She had her grandson with her. She brought four sets of impossible stones to set for christmas presents. I sweated, cursed, and finally made them. All of the stones were non calibrated, heavy carat cuts which do not lend themselves to setting in rings, earrings, etc. I said ok, and she hands me an $100 bill, the four sets of stones and walks off. One set was 6mm 1ct., tanzanite pair with 6mm trillion. One set was 8mm tanzanite portuguese cut ct cut. One pair was 7mm princess cut Alexandrite. One pair was 5X7 oval saphires, One set was 11mm London blue Topaz. No bigge, no one makes settings for the stones, and they were needed day before christmas. I did it. I sweated, cussed, worked untill I couldn't see. I delivered them today. We got to talking and she is a GIA top graduate. SHe is a foremost gemological expert. Ok, she showed me her rough, cut stones, and her faceter. We got to talking. She gave me her faceter. I almost died. It is a brand new Ultratec!!!! I can barely sit. It has all digital readouts, full set of dops. I have more rough than she has so I do not need any. If she gives me some, I will not say no. All I can say is holy moly. It seems too good to be true. Merry Christmas everybody.

Merry Christmas to you, Merry Christmas to you, Merry Christmas to everybody! And a great new year too! Now, don't ya'll just wish you could hear me belt that out! I do hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas and Santa is very, very good to you! And have SAFE and Happy New Year! Doc, looks like Santa has already visited you in the form of a woman whose life you brightened up a bit! KD, congrats on selling some of your stuff! I do believe that you will be able to sell them as fast as you make them and someone sees them. Wish I would have gotten the beading bug long before now, so I could have had some to sell as Christmas presents. Oh well, the story of my life - day late and dollar short! There's always next year. I am not yet finished making all my Christmas presents, but thanks to the kid's in-laws, I get until next Saturday before Santa comes to our house. So, I will be a busy gal next week trying to get it all finiished. llana

My Christmas grinder is all set up on my bench, waiting patiently for me to get the thing to slow it down. I got $150.00 for Christmas too ... now the question is, do I put it away and save patiently for the tile saw I'd like or do I get myself another tumbler? It's just burning a hole in my pocket as I try to decide what to do. Tomorrow is our big Christmas get-together, maybe I'll get more $$ and can get both. Merry Christmas all! I hope your holidays are filled with love and laughter and all your dreams and wishes come true.

I would seriously look at the tile saw you posted. It is a very agressive, large kerf saw and the overhead cut might be cumbersome. If it were me, I would first look into blades. Then I would find a thru table model that will accept the blades. The saw is not really the issue. It is whether or not the blades will work. Tile blades are very coarse and print on the slabs being cut. I have used them along with doing tile work. I had to do a lot of grinding to remove the saw marks. The large kerf also eats up a lot of stones. If cost is an issue, which it is to me also, I would get an arbor. Ace Hardware as an example, sells a plain arbor. I found one for 23$. Then you will have to get a motor. Used washing machine motors work well, and they have a mount already attached. Bread baking pans make great water trays. Steel flashing, found in Home Depot and a pop rivet gun makes great splash shields. A great table can be made from pressure treated lumber. Essentially, for half the price of the saw you showed, you can make twice the machine! I bet you know folks who work with wood, steel, and electrical and I bet they would be glad to help/show how it works. The point is to not just save a penny, it is to make a machine you know and can use it to its full potential. I have a lot of Loretone cutting, grinding equipment. To be honest, now that I know more, I should have taken the chance and made it myself. Of course, hindsight is 20/20. Perhaps you can benifit from mine.

Thanks Doc, I do appreciate the help, sure can't afford to "waste" the $$. Do all tile saws have that same problem? I mean the part about leaving the saw marks on the stones? I really want to get one but don't want to be so impatient as to get something I'm not going to like or that isn't going to work good for me.

Cher, tile saws use a blade that is at least 1/8" in width. The diamond is a 36 grit. With some saws, the blade will chatter and shatter stones. They are meant to slice through clay and what we do is much more fine, and the mohs is harder. Building a slab saw is easier than a person would imagine. I reccomend it.
