I found a site with plans for making a tumbler. It looks reasonable. It is www.watchrepairer.co.ukI think it might work. It looks fairly thought through.

Doc, It's a nice set up but the guy went way overboard for the size of his barrels and what he's using it for. Consider the cost of the pillow block bearings alone compared to a couple of nylon friction bearings used by Thumler's on their 12 ansd 15 lb units. Another thing is driving the second shaft. For what? When you put the barrels on the unit "they" will drive the other shaft. It's awful big as well.If I remember it's something like 39" lg x 18" wide!! You can build a tumbler with a much smaller frameand even bigger barrels for a lot less money. I didn't look to see what HP the motor was but I do remember it being kind of big as well. The guy did a great job but he spent a lot more time and money then he should have,,,,,,, Just my thoughts on it,,,,,,,,,,,,, Tom K

Hi,
To Tom K, Drive on 2nd shaft -- if you havent a drive on to this the drums waltz off I use a 3/4" band off a old car inner tube.cheap and cheerful I must admitt a 39" bed is big. One of mine is about 12 to 14 inches I used 3/4" block board end boards and base I run one 5 1/2 lb paint tin on it & if nessary can put a 4" 1 lb as well this goes faster so I use a dimmer switch of a light 240v to slow down a bit, the rollers are 10mm stainless steel I picked up in a scrap yard and I bought a bundle of bearings from a surplas stock,The tin slips so I use a rubber garden Hose or (on this one) washing machine hose, The motor is of a oil central heating furnace and runs real c o o l. The little pulley is a old rubber castor drilled a tight fit and shaped with a old file in situ !! The roller pulley(the only part I bought new) is a new pram wheel with the rubber tyre cut off from B&Q
How is this? I can send you a photo or two if you want my Email is john.mattison@breathe.com .
