Hey yall, Hows it going? Well, today I decided to go to a rock shop here in Missoula and bought some grit and asked the gentleman what kind os rocks I can use for tumbling for a newby and he told me to by the Agets that he had for sale. I told him about the stones that were not polishing that came from out front yeard and he said that those types of rocks will almost never polish because of the type of rock here in Montana. So I bought some Agets and he told me to tumble these Agets in stage one for 10 days. Any input on really how long I should tumble them?
Thanks all

hi momma agates are tough when i do them i run for 7 days rinse the rock and barrel and run again for 7 days then take a good look at them if your happy with them move to 220 if not run again in 60/90 after you rinse barrel and rock and recharg again---i have seen agates run 4 or 5 weeks to get a good shape but they where real jagged

i agree with Sands here, you got to tumble those suckers till ou are happy with the overall shape, so yeh, sometimes that can take 2-4 weeks in 60-90 unless you start out with fairly smooth rocks. but agates are worth the wait because the shine up so nicely.
i thought Montana hade real good rocks...you need to make friends with this rock shop guy, find out if there is any good stuff you can find in your area.
good luck! KD

Yea, Momma! You got some good rocks but they are hard as, well, Rocks Shape them as long as you need to and once they are ready for 220, you'll be suprised how beautiful they will be. And once you see the change in 220, don't be too anxcious and move them to the next stage too quickly. I did some agates that came from a bag of driveway gravel my mom had and they were small, so they shaped fast and polished faster than anything else in the batch. Good luck! cookie

Hi Momma, I'm with everybody else. Agates are beautiful, but they do take a long time to shape. I have done some that took a month in 60/90. Thought they would NEVER shape up, but once they did, it was smooth sailin'. I never met an agate that would shape up to my liking in just two runs of 60/90, unless I had cut them on the saw.
Right now I have two 3 lb. barrels running of do-overs of agates, quartz and some other stuff. These are rocks I did when I first started tumbling and thought they looked really good when I got them out of polish. Compared to the ones I do now after developing a bit of patience and not moving them along to fast, they are pretty ucky. So, save yourself some disappointment and grit and let them run in 60/90 until they are nice and smooth with no cracks and pits. You'll be glad you did!

Thank you. I will defentally take my time with these. Also does anyone know how to cut or break Obsidian and Petrefied??? Wood? I got them for X-Mas and I dont want to ruin them just by wacken them if its goin to break on the inside. Any Ideas? How well do they polish. How long in tumbler? Can I put my Crazy Blue Lace Agets in with them or should I tumble them on there own?
Thank You
