Hey all. Hows it going? I have another question and I was wondering How do you break Petrefied Wood and Obsidian? DO they Polish well? I also have some Crazy Blue Lace I bought from a different Rock shop here in Missoula. She has A LOT of stuff in her place. Do I have to have someone cut the Obsidian? I got the Obsidian and Petrefied Wood for X-Mas and Its just sitting here. Can I tumble Crazy Blue Lace with the Obsidian and Petrefied Wood, or should I tumble them all on there own? Thanks for all the help everyone.

I put a small anvil in a cardboard box, put the rock on the anvil and used an old chisel my dad gave me and used a heavy hammer, I tried to let the weight of the hammer do most of the work. I used the cardboard box to keep the rocks from flying into the grass. Tami

You do need something to break it on, like Tami said. I use a small piece of steel plate. Don't try to do it on cement without something under it (steel/anvil) or you can crack the cement. I also have an old rug that I throw over the rock to keep chips from flying, then just whack it with a sledge hammer.

The hardest rock I ever broke was Brazilian Agate! It took many wacks with a sleg to just crack it. I DO recommend using a chisel so you keep the fractures to a minuium. Oh yes.... pieces fly eveywhere and they are sharp... be very careful!

Hey momma, be very careful when breaking the Obsidian. It is glass and will behave just like you broke a window pane. It will make EXTREMELY sharp shards and needles. Just be very careful.

you should tumble the obsidian all by itself for best results, you lose a LOT of material too because it is so soft, what size are the pieces, momma? are they really gnarly on the outside or fairly uniform? there are some good threads in here on how to tumble obsidian, you should read a few. you may want to stick with the harder stones until you tackle some of the softer stuff.
the pet wood and the lace (agate?) are way too hard to tumble with obsidian.
i sacrifice a plastic garbage bag, wrap the stone in it and then whack away with an 8 pound sledge. that does a good job of keeping most of the shrapnel down. safety glasses are a real good idea too.
good luck!
