Zoran,
This is a hugely helpful tutorial. Thank you. This year's goal is to make a few things out of nice tumbles, and drilling will be a big part of that. Thanks again.

Zoran, Your English is great, your pictures and text were right on the money. Thanks for the very informative post. It looks like you have made drilling a lot easier for a few of us.

This was a great tutorial, Zotika! If you don't mind, I have an trick that I would like to share when drillling, too. I tighten down my pendants in a vise when I drill, too, and after breaking one or two because I tightened them down too much, I came up with a solution. If you can find a thin strip of rubber, like inner tube rubber, cut two square pieces as large as the largest cab you will drill. Sandwich the stone between the two strips and then clamp them in place in the vise. The rubber will protect the stone and when you squeeze the vice tight, the rubber will mould itself around the stone and help hold it in place tightly. I use this technique all the time and it really works well. If you want to spend $10, the ideal rubber to use is the weather stripping that is used on the bottom edge of a pull down garage door. It is fairly thick and has a lot of "give" to it. You can buy these strips at just about any hardware store or Home Depot-like places. Now, if any of you get the idea to cut a "little, tiny piece" off your own garage door weather stripping, be prepared to explain to your spouse that the squirrels must have chewed off the missing piece!

i missed it the first time too, great tutorial, Zoran! i still can't believe how darn CLOSE you come to the edges and still get a perfect hole without breaking the cab. you have waaaayyyy more finesse than i do!

Three cheers for zotika! I tried this method and it works GREAT! I'm now a hole drilling maniac. It elminiates so many problems, I can't even tell you. I still drill from the back to the front because I haven't quite mastered not skipping at least once. but they are small SMALL skips and nothing compared to the wandering drill bits I experienced trying to do this free hand. It really is a great method zotika and I can't thank you enough for sharing it and for explaining it so well.
