Just wanted to say hi- I'm new here- My main pursuit is metal detecting- and I got a Thumblers to clean up my coins- Well it came with a pack of rocks and grit- and well you probably know what happened next- My first batch finished last night and I was pretty pleased- I have a bunch of jasper and agate running now and I just ordered some of that Ocean Jasper- MAN that stuff is Beautiful- Can't wait to start that stuff up- I can't promise that I will be here a lot- but I will stop in from time to time- I have been collecting rocks for 15+ years and My sister is a PhD in geology (so I can usually get some good stuff from her) My main focus was Herkimer Diamonds (quartz) and Adirondak Garnet but the tumbling bug has bit me bad- Love your pics and posts

Welcome indeed, and prepare for the madness ahead. I find it useful to have a tinfoil hat when tumbling. It has just begun. Hope you stay around.

Hi stefan and welcome. What's the best thing you've ever found with the metal detector? We have one, ostensibly purchased to try to trace buried pipes in our backyard. What we soon discovered however, was that whomever built our porch threw every bent nail out into the yard...so you can go two metal detecting inches without finding a nail. bleh But on the bright side, now that you're a member of our merry band you'll have a whole new world of treasure to explore!

Thank you for the welcome- My best MD find was a 1864 2 cent piece. Herkimer is an awesome place to collect- I have had pretty good luck (actually a lot of hard work) there. My largest was 2.5 inch crystal- I have a real nice 1 inch crystal gradeA- that was offered $150 for (worth much more). As for collecting Garnet- well GORE Mountain is always good (I have never paid to go in the mine- but collected a lot of small pieces in the parking lot!)- But pretty much any back road will have something on it. I tried tumbling some- well the crystal chunks came out pretty good,, but the stuff in the matrix was less than satisfying- It is round and you can see the garnets but that is about it. Has anyone ever tumbled Herkimer stuff? I have a lot of broken pieces - The matrix at Herk is very hard Dolomite so I'm pretty sure Matrix peices won't work but I wonder about the individual crystals?
