A newbie question: does anyone know how to tumble polish glass up to 'water clear?" I have been fire polishing dichro-but it is too thick (1/4 inch) and I want to grind it down and then put in in a Berry's vibro and polish all the way back to 'perfect' for jewelery. The problem is that dichro glass is really a metalic colored glass capped with a layer of clear. A wonderful man at Covingtons said I would have better luck with a belt sander, but these are small bits of glass and hard to hold. The guy swears its impossible to get the clear glass back to they way it looks when it comes out of the kiln. Any suggestions at all would be helpful.

hi bear im not a pro but i would think the best way would be to use diamond paste up to about 50000 on felt wheels on a grinder then some optical cerium to polish --- iv never done it but that seams like the way to go ---what iv herd about tumbling is it frost the glass so you would be going in the wrong direction if you tumble

Hi Bear, Moh's Gemstone Hardness Scale,,, www.orionsgemz.com/Mohs.htmlputs glass at 5-6 and obsidian at 5 so you should be able to get a mirror shine to your glass if you tumble it as obsidian (volcanic glass). Tom

Hello Bear Mountain,
I have had some good results with glass. I use Tripoli as a prepolish and then go with Tin Oxide as a final polish.
I use a vibe tumbler and I have been satisfied with my results.
Hope this helps,
John

:)Thank you so much everyone for helping me the the glass question. I have a lot of things to try now and am very excited to get going, rather than discouraged as I was before.

Hey Bear don't get discouraged with anything you try to tumble. When I started all I had was a small book and a few great people I met on the web. There was nothing like this site and believe me I went through hell making more mistakes theen you can imagine.I wasted masses of grit and polish and once I even had a lid literally blow off a tumbler and there was slury and rice all over my shop! I've been discouraged by other things in life which caused me to loose interest in tumbling but I always got back and dug right in. Don't ever get discouraged Bear,,,,,,,,,, We're hear to help and help we will! Tom
