I was tossing & turning all night last night because I'd ordered some Mexican Lace (special thanks to Llana for trying so hard to set that up). Weeeeeell, that did not have a pleasant ending. In the shortened version, I get no rocks because it would have cost me waaaay too much like $25 bucks for a pound of rock. BUT, thanks to (Connrock and many other helpful folks) I got a site in Canada where they sell grit & such - no rock, but it's a start…. Well after an email, I found out that they are in the maritimes but the guy lives about 20 minutes from my home/work and he said he'd save me the delivery charge…. Woohoo! Well this does not yet have a happy ending as I haven't gotten my order yet, but things are looking up - considering I was about ready to unplug my kiddy tumbler and give up completely on tumbling anything… Maybe I'll sleep better tonite - now if only I could get some rocks………...

I think you'd need a snow PLOW to get to me here!
What you read isn't even the worse part: I have a kiddy tumbler (my sob story) and I wanted to get a better one, hubby won't let me pay the $80 or more for a new 3 lb model, so I thought I'd get my dad to build me one - well it turns out it would cost me almost that much to make one not including the time & effort it would take + the year of waiting for it - so that project got scraped. But it may still have a happy ending to that part of the story... I may get a used one... I see a PM... *silently praying for good news*

Tweety, give yourself a break. I do not know about the rest of us, but I had to learn everything the hard way. I bought the wrong stuff, wrong tools, added the wrong additives, fried a tumbler, ruined a brand new diamond blade, bought a mess of junk stones at an high price. It is all part of learning. If it all worked out all right, we wouldn't have needed this forum in the first place. However, needing it, and thanks to Andy, we have it, we have all come together. Each one of us has something to teach someone else. You, the newcomer, you teach us how we have to reach out and show the better way. Tweety, one day, it will all come together. It will seem impossible. It will seem endless. The frustrations will mount and we will want to give it up. Then, one day, a ray of hope will show, and more, and more. One day, you will be able to teach and help someone just like you are now. What we do is so involved, so challenging, after a while we forget how to tell how we learned. I hope you stay. I hope you break through on something we do not do and are able to show us. It is just around the corner. Hang in there.

It's just a matter of time, but it will come.

Thanks guys for the kind words of encouragement. I have made a bit of progress. Seems something may have opened up for me Yeah! ;D A Canadian site has rocks to offer for a pretty nice price. $4 Cdn a pound for agate, jasper, pet wood & quartz (which seems pretty good) They also have "imported" stone like blue lace agate (WOW very pretty - haven't seen any pics of this here yet), Aventurine, Indian Jasper, Crystal Quartz, Rose Quartz, Sodalite, Amethyst, Citrine, Lace Agate, Black Skin Agate, Leopard Skin Agate, Tiger Eye, Turritella Stone, Red Jasper, Unakite, Labradorite, Snowflake Obsidian, Amazonite, and Dalmation Stone - sorry for the long list - I'm excited again about this... PLUS hubby is blowing big bucks trying to qualify for a poker tournament and I casually mentioned that he was blowing all this money and I couldn't even have a nice tumbler - he said go ahead! - So there is still hope for me - I may actually be getting somewhere soon But once again, thanks for all your help and encouragement in keeping me going at this, come hell or high (um) snow banks! I'll probably start with tumbling my stones in my kiddy tumbler, if I find that I like the price it comes to with shipping & if the quality comes out pretty good (considering the tumbler) - I may then invest in a better tumbler... Things are looking up and the weather is looking much warmer too

Tweetie- Glad to hear things are looking up- I don't know how far from the states you are- but a road trip could be in order- Plus Canada Has a ton of rock that can be tumbled- as for the tumbler- Well my wife has told me that I can not buy a new one- But my Cabela's credit card gives me points that will add up to a new THUMBLER 2 barrel- It is gonna take a while but meanwhile I'll use my kiddie tumbler (it work great -just can't put in as much and it takes longer) and my Thumblers Model T (a gift from my sister) so hang in there- all is not lost!

My kiddy tumbler is pretty good/okay I guess, I've gotten not-bad results from it - if I could just be more patient and keep tumbling longer (but I had no grit, so no use keeping them tumbling in sludge for no reason) - It's in my cold room in a thermal bag, cuz it's freezing there but it's not yet overheating, I had to modify my bbl lid so it would turn on the "spindle" but it seems okay - gonna need more elastics to keep it going. But now that I have the grit, I may leave them in longer in the coarse grit - my last batch cleaned up my barrel really good - took all my roughed-up sides and made them smooth again... Pretty good for a Toys-R-Us model

Yea those kiddie ones do work- mine is like 10 years old and had not been used in 7 years- until I reserected it to serve duty for tumbling my Metal detector finds- well now it is running rock- but it does take some time- As a matter of fact it is the same model that is shown on the title page of this site (the Rolling Stones lectric Tumbler)- When My sis gave me the Thumblers for Christmas- well lets just say the flame was rekindled- Now I am nutso for this hobby- I can't wait to crack open the lids and see what comes out!
