I've been sort of laughing to myself this past week after hearing about my husbands first trip to a rock show. He works out of town for weeks/months at a time and is always looking for something to do on the day(s) off. So there happened to be a rock and gem show in his area this past weekend (he's in NE Texas). Wow, he must have mingled with the right people or something, because every day since, he brings up something rock related. He said he covered my Christmas/Birthday/and Valentine's day presents after leaveing the show. He mentioned quite a few of his purchases but not all(need some surprises). I'm pretty excited about the 12 lb. tumbler, since my double barreled CE recently died. Of course, he thinks the coolest thing he got is a piece of Coprolite (petrified dinosaur dung) So now he found another guy he works with that's a long time rock hound and they discover bucket loads of petrified wood. Pretty funny, coming from someone who one year ago wouldn't pull over at a rock show unless I whined nonstop. Of course he told me after looking at the tumbler he picked up, "I could have made that, there isn't that much to it" (As if I haven't dropped hints all last year) What keeps popping into my mind is back around 10 years ago, when I met him, I was dabbling in woodworking and to him, all cut trees were for firewood. Fast foreward to now, he has his own saw mill, piles and piles of lumber, working on our log house and logs all over the place to be cut. Hmmm..... I wonder where the new rock interest could take him? Guess he also must have felt a bit guilty about being gone and hearing me whine about the cold snap, then the snow storms and the woodstoves, and the waterpipes freezing, and snow shoveling. But hey, it worked. 7 -10 more days!

Congratulations on the new tumbler (and other things as well).
I know when we started it was just my kids & I. My wife thought I was nuts collecting rocks. As soon as she saw the first batch go from rough to prepolish she was with us doing it all.
Now she is getting into wire wrapping and made EVERYONE she knows some short of rock jewerly for christmas.

My wife calls my hobbys- interesting-- as in Honney- look at the ocean jasper after 6 days in the course!!!--- Hmmmm interesting. But I did catch here looking at the Botswanian Agate waiting to be tumbled-she told me that it was very unusual looking and then wondered if I had any plans for it- I told her I did not have any plans for any of the stuff I'm tumbling- She just said --Interesting.

My family loves to look at the stuff I tumbled. My mother often comes home with a rock or two from her trips. My family has also given me ideas of what to use with some of my polished rocks. We have always been rock hounds especially when we would go on vacation and would get out to walk the dog or stop to look at something really neat, we would also look for rocks to use as suvaniers(sp?)

Yeah Stefan, I know what you mean, hubby just looks at them and asks what I plan on doing with them? "I'm not sure." "Well what a waste, who's gonna buy rocks?" So I make little earrings & keychains for my daughter - she's waiting on the amethyst chipettes for earrings in my almost finished batch. I can make jewelry out of them, but I'm too timid to go & sell them - goodness knows that doesn't come from my mother's side who could sell you dead horse twice!
But to see my daughter's face when she gets those things is priceless - it's all worth it just for that - besides, none of her friends' mom's do craft stuff like that or MAKE them gifts & earrings. Now if only I could get the guts to sell some stuff.

"I got a new one hooked"
...lol, well good for you! Lots more fun when the family gets into it.
Everyone here is hooked, wife is trying to get us all started on jewelry, the youngest confiscated one of my barrels awhile back for his own tumbling endevours (finally got his own tumbler), and even our teenage daughter goes out out with us looking for rocks in the summer. And of course everyone goes through and picks out their favorites stones from the finished batches for their collections...
And congrats on the 12lb tumbler!!

I might have some reason to worry. This morning when I talked to him, he said he has some of the petrified wood running in my(?) tumbler. He joked around about doing it the other day, so I gave him a few pointers.
Gee, I hope it makes it into my shop when it comes back.

The other funny point was I was so busy trying to get my little nephew hooked on rocks, I didn't realized the advantage of getting the "big spender" hooked. I can't wait till next summer when my sister in law sees rocks all collecting all over her emaculate house. ;D

It seems that I can get just about anyone hooked on the addiction but my wife Nancy! She's been out collecting with me but she preferes to collect on her own. Lets see,,,,,,,,,,,, Last year it was a 5 day cruise and she came home with some self collected jewelry. The year before it was 5 days again and ditto on the jewelry. Year before ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, This year she's doing somethiung different,,,,,,,,,,,,, Going on a 6 day cruise!! LOL Some of you have seen the field trip photo's I posted last fall when we were in VT.Nancy found out that there was a very small collecting area in Gorham NH so we drove up. I don't know how she found this place but for sure it wasn't on a topo map. I didn't do any collecting there but she hit the mother lode!!She collected a beautiful Lightning Ridge opal and diamond 14K gold ring!! Of course I had to pay the collecting fee!! Da*n,,,,,,,,I won't take HER collecting again!! Tom

Kim, He joke around about using it and I had to set him straight in a hurry. He was going to tumble some of the amber and malachite he bought at the show . There would be nothing left! Tom, to funny about how your wife collects rocks, and I'll bet you have some amazing ones yourself. Wonder if yours were in a store if she'd buy them.

HI Joanna,
I don't know where your husband was in North East Texas ... But, I know of a spot along the Canadian River that look just like the Petrified Forest ... there are whole trees sticking out of the ground and the ground is cluttered with big and small chunks all over the place!
It is illegal to collect any Petrified Wood from that area, as it is state land and they know about it ... but, not many others do. I do know of a man who got a 200 pound chunk out of there and it's gorgeous material!
If he finds that place ... you had better plan on getting a bigger house!
Congratulations on the tumbler!
John

Wow, I'm picturing in my mind what would happen if he was collecting pet. rocks that were illegal. That was put a damper on his enthusiaum. I sort of doubt it though, what they are doing is knocking down trees and dirt work for widening a pipeline and they have inspecters practically holding their hands most of the job. He's even got some odd and ends logs saved for me and the wood shop. At many of thoses jobs the trees are burned or chipped, what a waste. Good thing his newer camper is half cargo space and half living space. Bigger house! No, the house is somewhat small, but hey, the two garages are big (never big enough, though).
