Now that we've got one batch under our belt, and that my daughter's seen a lot of your picts....namely you Cookie....she's asking, "Daddy, when can we make a necklace..." So, is there any way to make a "crude" (meaning without fancy tools, supplies) necklace for a 7yr old. Her birthday is coming up in a month and I thought it would be cool to suprise her w/ a neat little citrine piece we polished up recently. thanks again for your help, Gaetz PS.....just made it to JUNIOR STATUS

Easiest way would be to put a "bell cap" on one end of the stone and use some sort of leather cording for the necklace - someone posted a pic of this - sorry I can't remember who

i agree with Tweetie, bell cap and some glue, get a nice little chain at the mall or your local Wally World. next idea would be to get some craft wire and try your hand at a simple wire wrap. lots of online instructions available for that, but does require some tools and skill!
Rockyraccoon had some very nice pieces she made with the clay that you bake in the oven...not sure where to get that, but i'm sure it's available online.
if you want to make other things besides necklaces, order some pin backs from Fire Mountain or get some magnets at your local craft store and glue to your hearts content!
good luck, Gaetzchamp, and happy birthday to your little rockhound!

i agree with the bell cap idea too....they are simple and readily available. infact thats how i made my first necklace years ago...it held up for years. but the key is to get a good glue...one that wont turn to powder or come off with water. i personally like weldbond...its waterproof, clear and sets in an hour and cures in 24. but if you do try wrapping the stones, which isnt all that hard, a key to getting a good tight wrap is using a pair of needle nose pliers. after the stone is wrapped, grab one of the wires and give t a half turn twist...it will pull the wire in tight...there are other ways but they get more complex...but i would at least give it a try. anyway...good luck!

See what happens when a question is asked? We rush to share what we have learned. I would start with bell caps. Use leather cord and make a primary first one. Then, look at the result. What would you like to see, and how would you like to see it made? Then figuire out how things are made. You will learn to solder, wire wrap, string beads, what findings do what, you will make your own findings........ Just the beginning with good questions. Good luck. Use two ton epoxy for the bellcaps. Vinegar will clean up uncured epoxy from the stone, and bellcap.

Hey Gaetzchamp,
If you are not able to find any bell caps or lecklace cords before you will need them ... let me know and I'll send you one of each for your daughter, then you can have one before your deadline!
Let me know if I can be of any help ...

I haven't used these guys yet, but the prices on bell caps, if you don't mind buying a gross (and believe me, if you don't think you'll use that many, you will!) are really good. www.rings-things.com/cgi-bin/hazel/hazel.cgi?client=64709128&SEARCH_KEY_CATEGORY=%2Bbctl&SUBMIT_ACTION_SEARCH.x=52&SUBMIT_ACTION_SEARCH.y=7I would have responded sooner but someone gave you a link to what I would have said anyway ;D Also, try your local Dollar Store, they allways have little leather and cord necklaces for a dollar each and you can just replace the cheap plastic pendent with your own stone. And something we forgot to mention. You will also need jump rings, like this www.kingsleynorth.com/skshop/products.php?catID=168Open jump rings are better for what you will be doing so you can apply them then close with needle nose pliers. The bell caps should be applied with the open "eye" facing out, then the jump ring. The bigger the jump ring, the bigger the necklace diameter. Like a cord or leather strap will need larger, a chain smaller. Good luck! cookie

WHOA! Cookie, these guys have some good prices on all their stuff! Have you checked out their beads! They have mook beads I can actually afford! I will be going thru their website making a list of all the stuff I want! Maybe I will be able to get some of what I want in the not too distance future, but would probably need a couple thousand to get everything I'd like to have! Dang, why couldn't I have been born rich instead of so darn beautiful! llana
