Ok, where do i start? I make jewelry but never tried wire wrapping. Anyone have any good tips or links to where i start? I wanna know how to make the wire cages because i have lots of little stones that i would like to put in them and also love the way the wrapped ones look. Thanks in advance ;D

What I did was to study pictures to learn the idea of them then got some craft wire and started practicing. Some of the others here are using Preston Reuther's technique of sculpting wire, which is a little different than wire wrapping.

If you go on preston Reuther's site you can find some of those cages - and other types of wraps as well.. I suggest craftwire too and studying the wraps that you find look nice (like Cher said)

I have to agree with Tweet! I am very much a newbie. I did go to Hobby lobby and buy the craft wire. It's cheap enough to practice with and I do look at alot of pics on ebay for ideas. Still learning...baby steps! LOL!

You are very welcome and I am so happy I could help out. Thank you for the Karma... Can use all I can get! Sent one right back at ya! If you can afford the book I listed earlier, it is an excellent guide to making tons of different items with wire wrapping and wire sculpting. It was the main source of me learning to do it. Also... thank you Kim for the great links you posted!

Holy Cow! Thanks Stumpy!!! (it's easier to type than the whole thing) I've been VERY interested in wrapping & so many around here do it so well that truthfully, I was intimidated. Now that I know there's not a secret club you have to belong to & that given time, patience, (there's that damn word again) practice & whatever else you need, maybe some of us lessor beings might be able to do it, well hell...sign me up!

You are very welcome and I do not mind being called Stumpy... In fact it has a nice ring to it. lol You have the key ingredients to do this wonderful art form. Willingness is the biggest just trying to do it is the next. After just a short while everything will just click and fall into place. Good luck and happy sculpting and wrapping!

I bought the Moods book - dang that looks easier than it is!! :-} Now, I have to find a good Canadian source for those square and 1/2 hard, etc. kinds of wires.
One more question - how on earth do you get the wire straight after taking it off the roll? Seems mine is all bumpy regardless of what I do!!

One more question - how on earth do you get the wire straight after taking it off the roll? Seems mine is all bumpy regardless of what I do!! Ok... first thing... You do not need to buy all that wire yet. Use your practice wire until you feel comfortable playing with it and your design is to die for and it makes you say... I wish I did this with Silver and/or Gold! Then you can buy the fine stuff and have a ball! Second thing... to straighten wire is simple once you get the feel. Pull it through a soft cloth gently and you will learn where to apply the pressure need to remove the bends. Takes a bit of practice, but once you get it, you got it. Don't get flustered and everything will come together and you will say... boy that wasn't hard at all! Happy wrapping!

That's good, sensible advice. I'll try to remember not to get flustered!!! Tears tarnish copper ......

You're very welcome. The only tears that should be falling are those Apache Teas wrapped in silver from your fingers.
