I am thinking of trying this. Can anyone recommend a brand of machine and a good book to learn it from? I will have to learn this solo, if it is possible.
Thank you wildshack

The links are helpful, thank you. tried the local club, unfortunately work hours and club seem to disagree with each other. Have you decided which machine yet?

Many clubs have faceting sub-groups. If you have a local club try to find a generous soul that doesn't mind showing you how they do it and what machine they like and why. I inherited a machine, had a friend give me one lesson and decided it wasn't for me. I'd suggest you try it before you spend big bucks for a machine. The people I know that facet love it and don't do much else lapidary- wise.

Here is what I did. I got an used machine, ruined some stones, and eventually cut some good ones. I experimented with different laps, polishes, dampness, water flow, cutting direction. I found some good FREE designs on the internet and of course Lapidary Journal. I also, then made a faceter. www.gearloose.com/why.htmlIt is at least equal to the pricey Ultratec I now have. In some ways it cuts better. I did make it real heavy, perhaps that is why. I leaned a lot making the machine.
