:)Hello All, Got a question for the tumblers out there. Has anyone ever mixed 500 fine and Tripoli together at the same time? I am trying to experiment a little and thought about mixing them. Any thoughts yeah or nay? Thank's for the time, Ed M.

I would expect that the 500 will dominate as it is harder material than the tripoli, but it probably can't hurt to try...

You would only get a shine as good as the roughest grit would produce. In other words, you would only produce a batch that looked like it came out of 500g. It's along the same lines as a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.

Then how about running it in the 500 fine first and then the Tripoli separately? Or do you just use one or the other? Ed M.

That's what I'd do- run the 500 once its done its thing, clean them up and run in tripoli before going to polish

I was wondering the same thing, thanks. Any rocks in particular you'd recommend this for?

I think tripoly is about 1000g. I have run 500g and then 1200g in my Lot-O when doing Apache Tears. Worked pretty good. SO this should be similar. WOrse case, you don't really need the extra step. Will help the softer stones mostly.

It will only help to create a better shine on ALL rocks. I used to run a 1000g stage before polishing in tin oxide and it worked well for me.

When tumbling apache tears, I use tripoli after a week of 400F. No polish after that, and they come out quite nice. For agates and woods, I go 400F one week, sometimes tripoli, then polish. It's hard to tell the difference in the shine.

I've run 1000 and tripoli in my Lot-O for 48 hrs and in most cases the rocks look like they have already been through a polish stage.
I use 1/4 teaspoon full of each.
I've gone from 400 or 500 to polish and don't like the results at all.I now ALWAYS use at least 1000 and or tripoli.
By using the vibe the cost of 1000,tripoli and even grit and polish is very low.

Hi Ed M, Run your 500 for 24 hours ( To get a breakdown of grit to 1000G) in your vibe then add Tripoly as Connrock says above ,
Experimentation the basis of a gloss finish !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
