I sometimes go through stages where I won't tumble or do any kind of lapidary for a while. Then I see stuff on these boards that get me going again. Awesome cabs, tumbled stones, jewelry, etc. I know that if it wasn't for RTH I wouldn't be doing as much. How about you?

If it wasn't for RTH I would only have a vague idea of what tumbling is and no idea of how to do it.
Would I still be tumbling if RTH was cut off tomorrow?
Yes I would but it is heaps more fun being able to show off your finished work to people who "get it" and know what you're on about.

Honestly, I wouldn't be where I'm at if it wasn't for this board. Two and a half years ago, I didn't even know that a rock could be cut. When I look at the stuff that I'm able to do now, it amazes me. I've had no formal training at all, only what I've read on this board. This place is a wealth of knowledge and I'm glad to be here. (and hoping that didn't sound too sappy) ;D

I'd still be tumbling as I have a school class I give rocks to and our club treasure chest/grab bags to keep filled but this site has vastly improved my tumbling knowledge and results and way added to my enjoyment. It's very cool seeing pictures of others' stones and sharing my favorites too....Mel

Before joining to RTH, I tumbled my first batch of rocks using grit ONLY (no water at all) and started with the 400 grit. Then I wondered why they came out ugglyer than they were in the begining. So all I know about tumbling I know from here. The same about cabbing. The same about wire wrapping. RTH is for me, besides a place to meet friendly and special people, a continuous source of inspiration and ideas. Yes, I think I'd still tumble rocks, but the fun wouldn't had been the same by far. Help from many people especialy James set me off again ,
Thanks for all the others that have helped since then especialy Conrock who keeps me " on the straight and narrow" & been especialy helpfull with my conversion to vibe polishing and the the Lot "O" experiance
Other people dont understand or see what we see in a rock so its great to be with like minded people that dont think your "Nutty"

If it weren't for this board, I don't know that I would have started tumbling in the first place...let alone get into cabbing or wrapping. Before this place I didn't know such things existed!

I'd still be tumbling and thinking about this board.
I've been tumbling rocks for quite a few years but when the web came into it's own I really "blossomed"!
I thought my rocks were polished until I saw others that were sent to me and that got my wheels spinning.
I belonged to a few other lapidary/mineral groups and still do but when I found this group it was Heaven for me!
I've learned a lot here and not only about rock tumbling or other aspects of lapidary and jewelry making.I've learned that there are a LOT of good people in this world who I would have never met.
Yes I'd still be tumbling away but it just wouldn't be the same without all you guys n gals!

i wouldn't have gotten started in tumbling if it wasn't for this board, and it's wealth of knowledge. It's something special to view everyones work, and nice to show off some of your own. I started wire wrapping purchased cabs first, and tonight or tomorrow, I'll be wrapping a stone I cut and polished myself for the first time.

that is a VERY good question. i'm not sure. like a lot of the folks in here, i've improved my skills (and equipment) because of the RTH forum. and yeh, i get encouraged and inspired by seeing what everyone else does.

A grandfather of mine gave me a large jar of his favorite tumbled rocks when he died and they have been buried in a closet for the last 20 years. When my daughter was three she found them and dug them out. We sat on the floor and spread them out all around us. I remembered almost every single rock in that collection and it brought back a lot of memories of my grandfather and I in his workshop, with the sound of tumbling rocks. I caught the tumbling bug long ago, but it has been in remission for a few decades.
My daughter, the rock hound, picks up rocks where ever we go, and at only 4 years old, she has quite a collection. If it wasn't for this board, I probably would have ended up buying a toy tumbler for her at Wal-Mart. We probably would have been frustrated with the results, and given up on tumbling all together. After haunting this board for a month, I bought a quality tumbler, and have tons and tons of good information that should lower the learning curve for us significantly.
Most importantly, I have a goal to shoot for after seeing the beautiful rocks y'all have created.

I would still have tumbled but my progress would have been so retarded by lack of knowledge...
I was in my local rock shop yesterday picking over slabs and a couple came in from Alaska with a bag of beach rocks they'd gathered on Oregon coast. The store sold them a little lortone & the grits they'd need but these people were sooooooo green it was almost painful to listen to. The store didn't stear them wrong but there's only so much a brain can absorb at one time and the couple are going to be lost. Hells Bells...I still have fits here & there & I've been doing is for 3 years or so! LOL I REALLY wanted to pull them to the side & lead them to RTH so they would have a great place to reference, but felt I'd be overstepping some bounds so I just kept my mouth shut. (I know...hard to believe...huh?)

this group adds to my total rock experience. I have tried other forums like Bobs Rock Shop and Lapidary List and Rockhounds(on Yahoo?) but this group is my speed. Everyone is generous and cant wait to help others. We love to give! All different kinds and levels of experience and most people are not too condescening of the less knowledgable. A little politics here and there but people seem to pull their punches rather than go for the juggler all the time.
I have not tumbled any rocks for a long time since my wife threw me out of the garage and into the shed. maybe I'll get around to having the power installed in the spring. Sighhhhh. So I guess RTH has no effect on whether or not I tumble.

"Rockygibraltar" said it right, it would be lonely. Until the internet, every one of my hobbies was done alone, just me by myself. When I cut, slab, and polish, it's kinda like all y'all are right there with me.

I STILL don't do anything but rockhound and mine, which I guess is an indicator that actually collecting the stones is my main interest. However, I'm sure I'll eventually wander into other aspects of this whole rock thang. When that time comes, I already have a lot of knowledge about all different aspects, thanks to all of my friends here. This will alway be an invaluable resource for "all things rock".
So, since this forum is mostly about processing rocks, why am I really here? The people.

i am just getting back to tumbling after about a 2 year break. this is the only rock tumbling site i've ever visited. it's good inspiration. i probably would be tumbling, but i don't know how well it would look |
