RTH has been awesome! I started last November. Bought a Lortone Starter Kit on a whim at a Gold Show in Carlisle, Pa. Bought some rough mix on ebay. Found RTH. Life will never be the same. I've gotten tremendous knowledge from this site, saved a lot of time and rocks, found sources for getting rocks, got equipment advice and even found out the best places to buy equipment. I visit 7 forums on a daily basis and RTH is always the first and the last! Thanx everyone!

I just saw this thread or I would have responded sooner, because I would not have continued tumbling at all had it not been for RTH. I was ready to quit because I followed instructions from tumbler manufactures, and some rock sites, and they were not working. My first tumble attempt was Rubies, I was ready to quit, people here set me straight on Rubies, got me to try Agates and Jaspers. Wanted to do more besides just tumble, but do not have money for lapidary saws and such, hence Randy comes along with bench grinder idea, Steph and others was using WF for cutting shapes, Cher and others helped me learn to use Dremel,so I now use WF, bench grinder and Dremel to make and polish shapes. I find ideas on here all the time. Terry

I found you guys when I was thinking about buying a tumbler. With advise from this group I bought a Thumblers instead of a Chicago!!!
Then with some help I discover our local Chert Mozarkite instead of landscaping gravel.
Then I wanted to cut some rock and with help here bought a WF.
Then I wanted to grind some rocks and with help here made a grinder and lap that I did face polish some rock halves.
Then I wanted to cab and with some help from you guys purchased a used machine and even transformed it to all diamond.
I just this week bought a vibe!! I will need some help from here!
Now you may think I would be alot richer if I never stumbled across this RTH site.
Ahhh Grasshopper, Is it not better to be poor in pocket, but rich in rock? In this way we are prepared for the tumblings of life.

I go through stages like that with woodturning but not with rocks. I've been turning for 10 years but I've only been tumbling for less than one so tumbling is still so new. Tumbling also takes a long time so I will always have a tumbler going somewhere.

It strange because I always wanted to tumble as a kid- My dad would take us to a hobby shop and look at that single barrel Thumler and tell my mom that we should get it cause it would be a blast (she never gave in). I bought my son on of those Kiddie tumblers and we had a blast- but it was short lived (ok we ran out of grit- and I had no clue as to what I was doing). Then I got into Metal detecting. Oe of the easiest ways to clean coins (common stuff that your gonna cash in at the bank) is to tumble them with a little gravel and water. Well My sister got me a Thumlers Model T (yes the same on I used to dream about as a kid!). I did not have any coins that needed cleaning at the time so I figured I would tumble the little bag of stones that came in the kit- And that Tumbler has not stopped running since- and has NEVER seen any coins! Would I still be tumbling without this board? Probably- but it would be pretty boring stuff- as almost ALL of my rocks have come from here.

After I read part of this thread, I filled up a 15 lb barrel and started her up today on my lunch break. I haven't had anything rolling all winter.
I love the sound of rolling rocks!!!

i'd surely have given up on tumbling if i hadn't found this board. i'd never have gotten a shine with the tumbler and grits santa brought. but i do seem to be the slowest tumbler on earth still. i've been tumbling on my house warming present for stoner for about a year now. and until i get the rocks just right i have the rest of it sitting in boxes still. kim

I would still be tumbling but I know it would have taken me a lot longer to get a good shine if I hadn't had help from the members here.

I doubt I would have delved into lapidary as much as I have so far if it weren't for RTH. I probably would have just stuck to tumbling rocks for the most part and undoubtedly would have had to battle through all the problems I avoided or nipped in the bud by being here. Having a community of like minded people at your disposal just makes the hobby so much more enjoyable with the exchange of knowledge and ideas you just can't get anywhere else.

NO!!!
I would've blown out my tumbler, had no idea how to fix it, and gave up right from the start! I started tumbling a little over two years ago and had no idea what I was doing. I got a small tumbler as a birthday present and the rest is history. Within six months I had a Lortone 33B but, that wasn't enough! A few months later, I talked my husband into buying me a 3lb Thumler! I love them both equally.
I had some family issues to deal with and wasn't on RTH for a few months but, when I came back, everyone was just as helpful and friendly as usual. I just returned after almost a year due to health issues and am pleasantly surprised at the many old friends I've met here that are still here!
It's nice to have a place to go when you need help or just to hang out. Glad to be back!
