Depends on the variety John. There are orbicular rhyolites, slightly softer but still worth polishing that can be had fairly inexpensively. Then there's varieties of poppy jaspers that are no longer available/hard to find that can fetch a good price, like Morgan Hill.
If you would like, I can send you a few small pieces of Morgan Hill & Guadalupe to play with, along with the Montana I have set aside for you.

Is this tumble material? I want some because I just saw someone else (apologies for not taking note of your name, my concentration was thwarted when I saw your poppies*) posting about their finished batch and I said to myself, ' I just gotta get hold of some of that stuff.' Like ya do. Well like I do anyway. * Normally said 'when I saw your puppies', but thats for a different forum altogether.

John,
Yes, I know you dont do cabbing lol. The pieces that I have are tumble material that are just large enough for one cab, should I choose to cab them. Just thought you might want a few to toss in your tumbler.

Nope, no worries though.......I received the one, I know the others are on the way. My Scottish agates that I got directly from Scotland took FOREVER to arrive so I knew yours would take awhile.

John, Since I am a poppy jasper nut, orbicular and flowering jasper is what I always look for first off at any show I go to and like Shannon says, most all varieties of true jasper ( not rhyolite) are getting very scarce. Most the Morgan Hill/Guadalupe areas have been built over or are in parks where you cannot collect. Lot of poppies still to be found up around Hornitos but access is difficult unless you live there and know the folks and the back roads, and the brush has grown over most all the old pits from the 60's. There are a lot of other sites all up and down the coast but most is private property and most outcrops are pretty small. Probably the best place for poppy jasper is the Snyder Ranch pow Wow that was just a week or so ago. I was there last few years and prices for typical fractured Morgan Hill stuff ran $5-15 per pound in the rough. Only a couple of folks had Hornitos Jasper and it was about $15 per pound but was in big boulders so they ran hundreds of dollars. They had good stuff though and it was pretty solid so well worth the price. Guadalupe ran about the same if you could find it and Ocean Jasper was also in the $15+ per pound range and I was amazed at how badly the quality has gone down in the last few years. Overall, it could be said that decent poppy jasper is now getting scarce and expensive.....Mel
