Nice burro!
And I really like the dead cow stuff.... I have to ask - how'd that place get its name? Do you know? (I'm guessing dead bovine, but one can hope for an Alien Cattle Mutilation story... something with Feds in black suits and odd sounding two syllable names and helicopters seen traveling at night-inquiring minds want to know.)
Thanks for sharing.
***Disclaimer, the odd posting above does in reflect the true beliefs of elementary, but was in fact just an way of posting oddball stuff after having to be so careful with the Index. ***But I do want to know if there was a story about a dead cow. I like hamburger. ***Ask Sabre52 about his stinkinghorse jasper if interested in a different kind of thread...

It seems like Burro Creek area has a huge variety of materials. The last one didn't look to significant from the 1st pic but thanks for zooming in and doing a few close-ups. Those are very cool slices!!!! Steve

Wasn't the dead cow stuff named because the last trip had a dead cow where they found it and this year it had a dead chicken there? Seems to me I read that somewhere... Seems to have a ton of rhyolite in that area! Fran

Haha.. looks like the name stuck! Yup, it was named from the first burro creek trip. The story goes something like this...
During the first Burro Creek trip Beef and I set out to catch up to everyone else on a rock outing towards the Badgad area. I think we were off in the creek when everyone left. The directions in one of the gem hunting books stumped us so we spent the afternoon driving around looking for the rest of the folks. We just started picking dirt roads and going down a bit, maybe a little digging, then back on the road. We were close to giving up when we drove down a BLM road and found a turnout. It didn't look like much until Beef kicked what looked like sun-baked cooler foam. It turned out to be agate. Our eyes widened and we quickly grabbed our rock picks and wandered off into a nearby wash. There was some of that cool yellow orby stuff and some that was just plain yellow jasper along with some nice whiteish agate chunks. The name came about when we found a cow skeleton in the wash. Funny thing was, some of the best rocks came from very near/under the cow. I think we were even using sticks. Needless to say I didn't lick any of those rocks ;D It turned out to be one of the best rock excursions I've ever been on. We never did find the rest of the gang but turns out they weren't too far off. Steve

Right on Steve, just like it was yesterday ;D When Christa and I went out there weekend before last we found a big dead rooster just a few yards from where the dead cow was. "Old Grim Reaper had a farm ee-ii-ee-ii-ohhhh.." Lowell, I remember Mel's Stinky Horse Hole Jasper was a subject of conversation when we found the place. heh.

Yeah, I remember the stinky horse hole jasper too! A rooster? not a good spot for livestock but a good one for rocks. Here's the cow... wonder if it's still there Steve

Yep, that's a dead cow, all right. Nobody in their right mind would look for agates under that carcass. ;D Beautiful stuff guys and great story! JO
