Monday I rode my motorcycle up to the U.P. What a great day. 300 miles on the bike, and a few good rocks gotten along the way.
My main goal was to go to the Kingsley North store in Norway, Mi. It was quite small with little on display, but the lady there said anything I wanted to see from the catalog she'd bring out for me to see. I had total memory failure and forgot all I wanted to look at lol! But they do have a room filled with rough rock, so in I went.
I just picked up a couple higher priced items.
First was a nice chunk of blue lace agate. Emily wants to make my mother-in-law a nice brooch for her birthday, and as her favorite color is blue, I thought this chunk would fit the bill.
Then I spied their bin of Silver Crown Psilomelane. At $45.00/lb (or $3.00/oz) I first walked right past, but curiosity got the best of me and I grabbed a chunk to see what the weight was. 1/8 lb turned out to fit in my budget lol. I should get several nice cabs from this (if I don't mess it up lol).
Then after I left Kingsley North, I headed east to the Iron Mountain Iron Mine. It's an old iron mine now used for tours. There's a nice gift shop with a lot of rocks for sale too. I didn't tour the mine, I mainly stopped for info in case I want to bring the girls up there.
After leaving the mine gift shop, I started looking around the rocks on the hill nest to the parking lot, and found a few nice pieces.
This one I think might be shale, but it's somewhat sparkley so I'll try a cab for Jennifer. The price was right, so it's worth a try.
Next I found a nice piece of druzy quartz. It's small, but beautiful in the sun.
A few pieces of I think quartzite
And lastly what I think is dolomite. At first I threw it back, but thought about the crystal structure in it and went back for it. I'm glad I did, the slab (another thread) looks kinda cool.
Then I was riding home and just happened to look at a road cut with the sun glaring on it. After pondering it for a mile or 2, I turned around and headed back. I picked up 3 nice pieces that the frost/freeze cycle busted off just for me lol. This is lots of quartz in a conglomerate. I'm calling this Dave's Falls road cut rock, because the county park by that name was just North of there.
I hope it's stable, should make cool cabs.
Thanks for looking!
Nate
