Hi All-
Finally got my first (ever) load tumbling. I've got a QT66 with both barrels running.
I've noticed that the motor is quite hot. Is this something I need to be concerned with and if so, any suggestions on how to cool it?
Thanks.

I don't have a QT66, but I have three Lortones All three run hot to the touch, even approaching *ouch* temperature.

This perfectly normal, so you're not experiencing a design flaw or anything. These motors run extremely hot. I've run one for nearly two years straight with no trouble.
Personally, I know that high heat reduces a motor's life - so I put a cheap fan on mine to try and dissipate heat, hoping that it will extend its life by a few years. It still runs extremely hot, but if it bothers you a lot, this gives a little piece of mind.
I don't want criticize Lortone, because they do make good tumblers, but to me - this is a sign of a cheap motor. No doubt, like many other things these days, they've had to reduce costs to maintain a reasonably priced product.

Just an update. Revco, I took your idea of a putting a small fan on the motor and it is making a big difference in the temp. Still feels warm but much better than before -- to the point of being able to hold the motor whereas before, it was far too hot for that.
Thanks.

Yes, Lortones run hot. As everyone can attest, this is normal. Just make sure the motor is getting good ventilation and they will run for years. -Chris.

My Lortone 3A runs hot, but in the past couple of weeks has kinda siezed up and stopped. The motor is still going but the "Drive Shaft" freezes. I've oiled it and got it working but I feel like I need to keep an eye on it. Any comments?

If you're not in a dirty environment, this shouldn't cause an issue at all. All of my Lortones have been run without the covers...for years.

As I also do .... It does help.. Leaving the cover off of the tumbler would only apply to the 3A and 3B tumblers The motor on the QT66 is already outside the unit

You're right. I missed that's what is being run by the OP. I only saw the Lortone name and went from there. Add the 45C to your list, as that's what I ran in addition to my QT66.

So when my wife complains the bedroom is too cold in the winter, can I move my tumblers there?
I like all of the answers and will add another thought. The people who build a sound insulated box for their tumbler are increasing the heat problem and asking for trouble.

I've mentioned this on one other thread. I raise my Lortones onto 1/2" standoffs for improved convection cooling.
