Well looks like I am going to Virginia end of this week or Monday I will have a little time to do some rockhounding or even some gold panning anyone from around Dulles and Harrisonburg area that wants to get together and do some? I read up that there is a creek that runs through Manassas that people find gold panning. If you have any other areas or things I should check out let me know.

OK anyone around there able to give me more ideas and locations of places I can either rock hunt or pan for gold? I will be in the Harrisonburg area for a few days I would say Wednesday-Thursday.

Hi Preston,
I live outside of Manassas. If I am guessing correctly, you might be talking about Cabin Branch. If that is the case, it is within the bondary of Prince William State Forest Park. No panning allowed. I've heard that with the price of gold going through the stratosphere, that the rangers are no making the rounds to make sure there is no panning happening. The Gold-Pyrite belt does go through Prince William County and I have wondered from time to time if any of the other streams might have something worth panning. Folks from the local GMH club here have told me that they have panned most of the local streams without luck. I take that with a grain of salt though.
Contrary creek is down around Stafford County and has been the big draw in the region for recreational panning. Unfortunately someone ran a vacuum dredge throught the publicly accessible parts of the creek.
As for the rock hunting, I'd love to show you some spots but I do most of mine out in the blue ridge area. Right about now I'd do almost anything for a day with a rock hammer or a fishing rod in my hand but soccer games and the honey do have got me booked for the next couple of weeks.
If you have any other questions, shoot me a PM or reply to the post. I try to get on the board a few times a week.

Well I saw a recent vid of someone prospecting on Neabsco Creek its just off I95 that runs right near Northern Virginia Community College so I will try and check that place out. In the vid he did find some gold in the creek.

Good luck! I've fished Neabsco Creek but never been far enough upstream to pan. If you see any construction sites, you might want to take a quick stroll. That part of the county has a fair amount of quartz crystals. I stopped by a site off Cardinal Drive a while back and came away with a sandwich baggie full of small crystals in about 45 minutes of walking the site. My only recommendation is to walk with the sun a your back. It makes seeing the reflections off the crystal faces easier to see. Too easy sometimes.

I'm in central Virginia and hoping to get out to Contrary Creek in the next few weeks. Finding gold would be great, but I'm really hoping to find some garnets there.
Preston, is that LSUrocks as in the tigers? I'm from Louisiana, but living in VA now.
