I have a covington 10" saw. The problem I have is when I cut off a slab the last little bit of the slab breaks off!! I tried starting the cut then after a bit 1/4" or so stop the cut and back it out and start again. Nothing works !! is it me the saw or all of the above?

It's not you or the saw. I've never seen a lapidary saw that doesn't leave a little "break out nub". You can minimize this by releasing your power feed when you're about 3/8" from the end of the cut, and feed the last little bit by hand. Press the stone forward slowly, using just a little pressure. You'll still get a little nub at the end of the cut, but it will be less. Don

Yeah, Remember rocks aren't wood and do not have the same properties. Your blade is being pushed against the the workpiece with some pressure so as the blade nears the end of the cut, the pressure against the rock fractures it and it simply breaks off. This is true even if you hand cut the rocks without the power feed as rock is not fibrous in the same way wood is and so is much more brittle. You can use glass nipping pliers to break off the stub or grind it off but you ain't gonna stop it from happening.....Mel

It happens to every slab I cut.

Would it help if I taped the ends before I cut them?

Taping won't prevent the break outs. Cutting oil will probably soften the adhesive on the tape, and it will fall off before you complete your cut. The nub at the end of a cut is something we all just learn to live with.

Keep an old pair of side cutters by the saw and just nip it, nip it! and load the next one! I always cut them off as it is easier to stack them in the storage containers. I'm probably a little OCD about it but, that's just me.
