Very nice, are there still rough sellers outside of shows and auction sites?

Very nice, are there still rough sellers outside of shows and auction sites? there is some green-white (but not as nice as the piece I got) at this shop in Austin, and they still have about 10 pieces of the pink (but not with so many layers - I did take the best). Each piece is 20-40lbs. There is some B grade at thegemshop.com, and there is a B-C grade offered by rocksj2b2 on ebay. I am sure there are some others. rockman69 has a C grade.

Erik, j2b2 is down by Albany OR, the MT hood club usually does a "field trip" there 2-3 times a year, he has some budget rock out in the yard and does a lb for lb match, for every lb of it the members buy he donates an equal amount to the club.
Excuse the partial thread hijack, that OJ looks super. I especially like it with the pink poppy look.

I am a frequent customer of that store in Austin and grabbed a big chunk of this also. I think it is $12 per lb. I was just there today and forgot to get the Imperial jasper she had saved for me. I`ll be back there soon anyhow. Need to get a belt for drum. They said the OJ would be hard to get after this. I can ask if any is left if you wish to have some. It is all big pieces so it may weigh quite heavy. Attachments:

Thanks for all of the replies, I have been buying some of the #2 quality (based on what I am seeing at the gem shop) on ebay of late. Haven't slabbed any yet but most of it is very pretty though the orbing isn't as prevalent. The really nice, heavily orbed material is way outside of my budget range given what I have seen on ebay.
I do have a few lbs of some nicer material that I picked up at a local show but it was end cut stuff so it will make for some nice cabs or a display or two but most of them would be swallowed up in one or two slab cuts.
I appreciate the offer in Austin, going to have to give it a miss. Have shot my wad, so to speak, and still have to pay Lee for that slab saw he is rebuilding for me (no worries!) ;D

It is $12, the pink is $6 and righ tnow it is all 25% off of that. Hard to pass up. Still I dropped $300 on two rocks, which is crazy even for me. - Especially when I want a new 12" blade soon.

Hey, I just noticed that you are in my college town of Lawrence! Did you get your OJ mail order from Austin or were you there recently for other reasons? I don't think I could afford a large rock at $9/lb (with the discount) in any case. I am sitting on about 50 lbs of OJ right now and have yet to slab any of it. Which reminds me, I need to get to cutting

Just visiting my brother in Austing for the weekend. Return to Lawrence Monday afternoon. Will be interesting getting on the plane with just under 60lbs of rock. I may send a large flater-rate - but the two bigest pieces will not fit, so I guess I now have a back pack for a personal item.
How about a photo of the 50lbs you are sitting on?

Very cool specimens! I saw a hunk of that pink flowered type of OJ at the Snyders show one year. Very like the poppies in some of the Hornitos Jasper pits. Seems more flowers than the more well defined orbs you see in some of the OJ . Definitely an example of how parallel geologic forces produce similar rocks at widely separated localities as the Hornitos stuff runs from the well defined spheres to the flower type patterns too....Mel

But I would have to stand up to do that...haha Waiting on the last purchase to arrive in the mail, ebay auction. Most of my material is the yellow, red, orange with some limited orbing. I just happen to find it lovely in its own right. I do have some end cuts of the white/green but again, limited orbing. Will do so when I get the chance. The whole works is up in the air at the moment, I have about a dozen half finished projects, each of which depend on the other (ie benches half built, can't organize till they are done, garage is cluttered, can't build benches till the organization is done....I am considering arson as a viable strategy) In other words....pics when I can find the camera, its probably under a rock ;D

I was at the shop today at the north location which is not where the big sale was held. Much better color slelction than at sale because they bought that entire huge crate of OJ from the same source. I`m also good friends with the manager there who is helping me get started in my cabbing work with the machine I got from her. There is a lot better selection of stones north but they will soon move it all to location where sale was held with a new lapidary shop in the building on the side of main store.

You were at the north store then. Sorry I thought you had gone to the truckload sale they held at the one on I-35. It was held Oct. 8-9 which is where Darstcreek and I loaded up on rocks. But as far as the jasper goes you got the better selection where you went Deb193redux. But at the sale there were some stones that weren`t available at the Kramer store like dendritic opal and some beautiful Brazilians from a different mine than the ones at other location. That is some beautiful jasper. My wife bought about a 6 lb. block of it. It`s was her choice to select to have me make my first jewelry out of for her. I`ll post pics when done. I have a lot of green in what she chose. I got a nice piece of picture jasper yesterday when I was there among other rough and supplies. Did you walk the entire yard of rocks when you were there?

Gorgeous stone there, I shudder to think of the price tag though How was it carrying all that on the plane?

I think you got some beautiful rock! I am looking forward to seeing the slabs you cut from this stuff! I don't believe I have ever seen OJ that solid! Great score! Fran

Bulk rock and planes do not mix well. Don't even get me started on how many TSA agents think rocks are banned. Twice I have had to get a supervisor to say they were OK. I probably should have put the smaller pieces in a FRB, or checked a bag. An extra 60 lbs was just about at my physical/safety limits for carry-on. frane: I hope to get some of this slabbed before winter makes my garage to cold to work in.
