At a show I learned the age of my favorite piece of lapidary equipment, my beloved HP 16 incher. One of the vendors was selling old lapidary journal magazines. And there it was, same hood and everything. The year, 1948. Steve Attachments:

J2 orJ3? Those old Lucite hoods are amazing, a freind has one and it will still clean up to pretty clear. Back before the Society of plastics engineers decided to add stuff to plastics "so it would break down in landfills". Yeah right, it takes UV light to break it down, they just wanted to sell us plastic stuff that we would eventually have to replace.
They made those 14 and 16 inch saws for a lot of years with very few obvious changes. What I can't figure out is both of the 14 inch saws I have are sporting a J2 name plate but they absolutely will not fit a 16 inch blade. Was the 18 inch saw also called a J2?

You'd pay more for that saw now than it cost new! Would be awesome to be able to get one of these for $195!

How do the model names work on the old HP saws? I have a model M2 with the metal hood with plastic window and have no idea how old it is. I'm assuming it was after the J2 but don't know for sure. I also am trying to figure out whether mine is a 14" or 16" saw since it appears that either blade will fit. I saw in another post today that someone suggested establishing a section on the board for manuals etc. where we could upload/download information about old equipment. I second that and hope it can happen. It would be amazingly useful, and would record the data on these items for posterity. Mary

I think all the HP saws took a choice of blades. My 24" was ordered from the factory with a 20" blade by the original owner who later put a 24" blade on it. Someone told me the vises have sizes forged in (14-16, 16-18, 18-20, etc.) but I've never looked to see. Sometimes it doesn't make a big difference. A 16" blade on a 14" saw will cut one inch taller but 1" less length. If you have a 14" with a 16" blade you will see the blade almost touches the back of the tank.
